THOMAS SAMMONS OF GIBSON DIES; RITES TO BE HELD TODAY - Gibson, Ga., June 7 -
Funeral services for Thomas J. Sammons, 42, who died suddenly here yesterday,
will be held at the Fellowship church near her tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock.
The Rev. Page will officiate and interment will be in the churchyard cemetery.
Mr. Sammons was a successful planter and had spent his entirelife in
Glascock county. He is surviced by his wife, Mrs. Esther Smith Sammons; three
daughers, Mrs. J. C. Mims, of Augusta, Mrs. C. T. Jones, of Rockingham, N.C.,
and Miss Sue Sammons of Gibson; fours sons, Tommie Sammons, Bennie Sammons,
Marvin Sammons and Bobbie Sammons, all of Gibson; two brothers, Grady Sammons
and Eugene Sammons, of Augusta; two sisters, Mrs. Kate Howard, of AUgusta and
Mrs. Pearl Thompkins of Savannah; two grandchildren and several niecesand
nephews.

J. SAMMONS, husband of Mrs. Esther Smith Sammons. FUneral services will be
conducted this (MONDAY) afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Fellowship church near
Gibsons. The Rev. Page officiating. Interment will be in thechurchyard. J.
C. Whitely in charge.
GIBSON OFFICER HELD IN SLAYING: Police Chief Albert Shepherd Charged with
Murder in T. J. Sammons' Death - AugustaChronicle, June 9, 1936
Gibson, GA., June 8--Charged with murder in the slaying Saturday night of
Thomas J. Sammons, Glascock county farmer, Chief of Police, ALbert Shpehered
was today being held in the county jail, awaiting a preliminary hearing
tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock before a local magistrate, at which time he is
expected to plead self defense.
The shooting, according to Sheriff J. L. Kitchens, took place Sturday night
about 9 o'clock on the streets ofGibson, just off the courthouse square. The
sheriff said that Shepherd told him that he shot Sammons in self defense.
Four of the five shots fired by the police officer took effect by Sammons'
body and he died instantly.
The details of the shooting were brought out at an inquest conducted Saturday
night after the shooting, when a jury ordered the police officer held,
returning a verdict "that Sammons came to his death from gunshot wounds
inflicted from the gun of Chief of Police Shepherd".
Shepherd claims, according to Sheriff Kitchens,that Sammons approached him
with a pistol after the police chief had arrested aman on the streets of
Gibson. The officer opened fire and Sammons fell mortally wounded.
Sammons was 42 years of age, and was a native of Glascock county.
Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 3 o'clock at Fellowship
church, ear here, the Rev. Page officiating, and interment followed in the
churchyard cemetery.
Sammons is survived by his wife, Mrs. Esther Smith Sammons; three daughters,
Mrs. J. C. Mims, of Augusta, Mrs. C. T. Jones, of Rockingham, N.C., and Miss
Sue Sammons of Gibson; fours ons, Tommie Sammons, Bennie Sammonsand Bobbie
Sammons, all of GIbson; two brothers, Grady Sammons and Eugene Sammons, of
Augusta; two sisters, Mrs. Kate Howard, of Augusta and Mrs. Pearl Thompkins of
