His Last Will and Testament

Death

Walter Stewart, Lord Blantyre, died in February 1617. He probably died at his house of Cardonald in Renfrewshire, Scotland, where he made his last will and testament on 24 February 1617. [NRS: CC9/7/15]

4 December 1570: John Steward of Mynto, knight, standing vest in the feu-farm of two acres of open land (terre campesiris) lying t.c., in the croft called Egleschemeis Croft, between the lands of Robert Mure, merchant, on the east, the lands of David Lyndsaye on the west, the lands or bams of David Mathie on the north, and lands or common layne on the south, in consideration of a sum of money and composition received from Michael Barde, citizen of Glasgow, and Margaret Smyth, spouses, resigned all his right and interest therein in their favour. Sasine given by Mathew Heriot, bailie. The said Michael Barde and Margaret Smyth to pay £4 yearly in name of annualrent feu-farm to those having right thereto. 15 April 1571:John Steward of Mynto, knight, provost of Glasgow, for certain sums and composition paid to him, resigned in favour of John Flemyng, merchant, citizen of Glasgow, and Margaret Andersoun, spouses, the south half of the west side and the north half of the east side of a piece of land, lying in the common muir of the city, adjacent to Gkurngadhill, on the north side thereof, called Allerbog, extending to two acres of land or thereby, as the palings or stobe are fixed (proui pali smU fid), Sasine given by James Flemyng, bailie. A sum of money [amount left blank] payable yearly to the city treasurer in name of the community. Witnesses: John Boswell of Auchinflek, Mr. Adam Steward in Allantoun, brother, and Walter Steward, son of the said John, the resigner, Archibald Woddrop, servitor, John Moresoun, John Stobo and Robert Lettrik, officers. 14 February 1587-88: Walter, commendator of Blantyre, gave sasine to Patrick Somervell of the King's bedchamber, as attorney and in name of Nicola Somervill, spouse of the said Walter, of the liferent of the lands and property mentioned in No. 3299 [Note} ; and that was done by the commendator, with his own hands, delivering to Patrick Somervill earth and stone of the ground and clap and hopper of the mill. Same witnesses as in No. 3299, with exception of Patrick Somervell, but with the addition of Robert Sinclair, writer and co-notary. Glasgow Protocols X: 3303

12 November 1614: Instrument taken by Walter Lord Blantyre, donator of the ward and marriage of James Lord Royston and apparent heir of deceased Robert Lord Ross, his father, for himself and as procurator for Jane Stuart, his daughter, upon his offering his daughter to James Lord Ross in marriage, requiring James to come to Blantyre with friends of his choice on 22 Nov next to discuss the marriage with Jane Stuart and her father, and requiring James to appear in the parish kirk of Blantyre upon Sunday 18 Dec before noon to solemnize and complete the bond of matrimony with the said Jane. Biographical Summary

Walter Stewart (d. 1617), 1st Lord Blantyre, was a Scottish nobleman. Educated with James VI under George Buchanan, he was prior of Blantyre, Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland from 1582 to 1596, an Extraordinary Lord of Session from 1593, an "Octavian" from 1596, Lord High Treasurer of Scotland from 1596 to 1599. He was imprisoned and compelled to resign by James VI in 1599. He was a commissioner for union with England in 1604. He was created Lord Blantyre, in the Peerage of Scotland in 1606. Ancestry
