Notes to correct this line:
1. William BARTLETT was NOT a Jr (his father was Thomas), and he did NOT have a middle name. There are extensive records for him, covering most of his life, and not one of them has a middle name or initial. A few people, once upon a time, believed a county history book which had his name a James, so they merged the two names together.
2. His wife, Sarah HATHAWAY did NOT have a middle name Elizabeth (she did have a sister named Elizabeth, and it would be very unusual to give two sisters the same name.)
If you have any court record or source document that has middle names for either of these two, please share it. Jim Bartlett jim4bartletts@verizon.net
3. His father Thomas BARTLETT did NOT marry Anne SETTLE; Thomas had a brother John who married Anne SETTLE and had a daughter Phoebe - I can provide a full Article that proves John BARTLEY (nee BARTLETT) of Culpeper Co, VA was the one who married Anne SETTLE. We don't know the maiden name of Thomas BARTLETT's first wife, Anne - and we need to continue to look for her correct ancestry.
There is a transcript of a bible with the names and birth dates of the twelve children born to Thomas and Anne (will email copy to anyone), These pretty much agree with my research over the past 40 years on this line.
William and Sarah BARTLETT lived on the Plantation in Fauquier Co, VA until at least 1785 - so all their children born before 1785, were born in Fauquier Co, VA. His father, Thomas c1733-1806, moved most of the family to Harrison Co, VA during 1785; but it appears William and Sarah remained in Fauquier - they sold the remainder of the Plantation there on 13 Feb 1790; and William is not in the Harrison Co, VA Personal Property Tax Lists until 1791; when he also bought land on Simpsons Creek. So all of the children through Susannah b 1 Jan 1790 were probably born in Fauquier Co, VA; and the rest of the children, beginning with Doratha b 16 Dec 1791 were born on Simpson's Creek, Harrison (later Taylor) Co, VA.
NOTE: William and Sarah were probably married in 1775 - Sarah was 15 when she became pregnant with Nancy b 5 Sep 1775; and I believe William and Sarah eloped when they determined she was pregnant. The BARTLETT and HATHAWAY farms were adjacent in Fauquier Co... Pointedly, there is no marriage date in the bible that has all the children's births...
Children:
Nancy "Nanny" b 5 Sep 1775 m 1791 Stephen POWELL
Thomas F b 8 Oct 1777 m 1801 Malinda BARTLETT (first cousins, dau of John BARTLETT and Anne BARKLEY/BERKLEY)
Eppa T (probably Timberlake) b 1 May 1779 m 1802 Rebecca BARNES
Sarah b 15 Sep 1782; d Sep 1786
John b 23 Feb 1784; m 1803 Sarah SELVEY (moved to IN)
William Jr b 3 Jan 1786; m 1809 Fanny BARTLETT (first cousins, dau of John and Anne BARKLEY/BERKLEY); Wm d 1814 and I believe his brother John adopted at least one child)
James W b 6 Sep 1787; m 1811 Catherine STROTHER
Susannah b 1 Jan 1790; d 1802
Dorothy b 16 Dec 1791 m 1806 Samuel SELVEY
Robert b 19 Sep 1795 1m 1815 Lydia WELLS; 2m Mary TALBOTT
Josiah b 29 May 1797 m 1819 Abigail GOFF
George b 27 Feb 1799 d 1799
Sarah b 8 Nov 1804 m c1822 Alfred LESTER
Many of these names come from Sarah Lawson TIMBERLAKE BARTLETT's side; some from William's father's side (Thomas BARTLETT); others are almost surely from William's mother's side (Anne unknown); so any information on the F in son Thomas F could be a clue; or the W in son James W; or the name George... would be welcomed.
William's father Thomas was born c1732 in Richmond Co, VA. There is one record of this Thomas Jr in 1748 in Richmond Co, but Thomas vanishes after that. There is a brief hint that he was in Stafford Co in 1750s. Thomas does not show up in any Fauquier Co, VA records until 1768. So William may have been born in Richmond, Westmoreland or Stafford Co - but NOT in Fauquier Co, VA. I recommend we just say b VA.
