William Bushnell was a carpenter and millwright. He m. 1st, 1675, Rebecca ( ), who may have been a dau. of John Stratton of Long Island, N.Y. who in his will dated 30 Aug. 1684, mentions a daughter Rebecca Bushnell (R-17). On 16 Mar. 1680, the citizens of Saybrook granted him a tract of 24 acres at Tilleys Point, or Round Hill Plain, bounded partly on the West by his uncle Stephen Bushnell (R-13). In this conveyance he is called "son of Lt. William Bushnell." On 27 Apr. 1692, John Bushnell, who calls him "my kinsman" conveys to him, by deed a tract of land in the Planting Field, which property had been acquired by Francis Bushnell, grandfather of the grantor, from William Hide on 7 Oct. 1660 (R-13). At a quarterly meeting of the town officials, held 2 Feb. 1701/2, it was voted to accept his offer to build a corn mill on Five Mile River, "a little above the wading place," and to grant him 30-acres of land as near the mill as possible, upon the condition that the mill be completed in 18 months, and after 21 years of operation of the mill, the title to the land should be secured to him and his (R-13). He also built a saw mill, but probably not near the corn Mill, which by 1705 was probably in operation. His wife Rebecca, d. in 1703, and in 1705, he m. as his 2nd wife, widow Sarah Bull, who survived him. The inv. of his est. refers to him as William Bushnell, Sen'r who departed this life Dec. 9, 1711.

It was taken by John Clark and T. Buckingham, and amounted to £224-17s-ld. Mrs. Sarah Bushnell, wid. and son William, made bond on 12 Feb. 1711/12 and made oath on 14 Mar. following. The names of the children were given as Ephriam and William Bushnell, and Esther
