First Marriage and Children

William married, first, a woman named Mary. Her first name is established by the birth records of her children and her death record. As discussed in Mary's profile, it is reasonably likely that she was the Mary Lane who was the daughter of Walter Kelway of Chelmsford, England mentioned in his 1650 will.

The date and place of marriage of William and Mary, his first wife, are uncertain. Based on the birth of their first known child on January 1651/2 in Boston, they were probably married in 1650 or 1651 in either the Massachusetts Bay Colony or England. Assuming that Mary was the daughter of Walter Kelway, William and Mary were married probably married in early 1650 since Mary was Mary Lane when Walter Kelway made his will in October 1650.

William and Mary had the following children, all born in Boston:

  1. Samuel, b. January 23, 1651/2,[4][5] m. December 4, 1677 Sarah (Foote) Dickinson,[5] resided in Hadley, Massachusetts until 1684,[5] d. 1690 in Suffield, Connecticut[5]
  2. John, b. February 5, 1653/4, m. before March 1675 Mehetable ________, living in Boston in December 1675. (See discussion and sources in John's profile.)
  3. Mary, b. May 15, 1656[6][5]

William's first wife Mary died May 2, 1656[7] There is obviously and inconstency between the dates of Mary's death and her daughter Mary's birth. Savage stated that the dates were as recorded in Boston records, but that one of the dates must have been misrecorded, with perhaps Mary's actual date of death having been May 22 rather than May 2.[8]

Second Marriage and Children

William married Mary Brewer, daughter of Thomas Brewer of Roxbury, on the 21st day of the 6th month in 1656 (August 21, 1656 in the "new" calendar).[9]

William and Mary, his second wife, had the following children, all born in Boston:

  1. Sara, b. June 15, 1657,[10][5]
  2. William, b. October 1, 1659,[11][5] m. June 21, 1680 Sarah Webster,[5] removed to Hampton, New Hampshire in 1686,[5] d. February 14, 1749[5]
  3. Elizabeth, b. February 3, 1661/2[12][5]
  4. Thomas, b. March 8, 1663/4[13]
  5. Ebenezer, b. March 27, 1666[14][5]
