Death 1914/117 Wellington; Mitchell, William O.
Southern Times Bunbury WA Thu 6 Aug 1914; Obituary MR. WILLIAM OWEN MITCHELL
The death took place at Cookernup on Tuesday morning, at 5 o'clock, of Mr. Wm. Owen Mitchell, of Newlands, from senile decay, at the age of 85 years (being the 74th anniversary of his arrival in the State) (snip).
Bunbury Herald, and Southern Times (WA) Thu 6 Aug 1914 Obituary WILLIAM OWEN MITCHELL.
Mr. Mitchell, senior, who went on a visit to Perth almost two months ago to stay with his daughter, Mrs. Evans, left the city several weeks ago, intending to return to his home at Newlands, where he resides, called at Cookernup purposing to stay a week or two there before completing his journey here.
He was taken ill last Friday week, and became so seriously indisposed that he took to his bed, and Dr. Moore, of Yarloop, was called in. After several visits he pronounced the malady to be incurable. There was no hope at all and the sufferer rapidly sunk and death came as a happy release.
Deceased played considerable part in the development of the State. He arrived in the State at the early age of eleven, his father being the first clergyman in Western Australia. He came in the ship "Shepherd," and his sister, Mrs. Courthope, is now the only survivor of the passengers of this ship. It is a coincidence that death came on the seventy-fourth anniversary of his arrival.
Deceased was 85 years at the time of his death. He was born in Bombay, India, and was at one time manager of the Prinsep Estate, and after following agricultural pursuits in the Northampton district settled at Newlands. Here he gave the land on which is the railway station and which was named after the homestead.
Deceased married Miss Bickley, daughter of Wallace Bickley, an English baronet, for many years a member of the Legislative Council.
There were 12 children, all of whom are living. They are : Mr. W. W. Mitchell, J.P., of Mount Barker ; Mr J. 0. Mitchell, Yar- loop ; Mr E. A. Mitchell, Onslow; Mr G. B. Mitchell, Cookernup ; Mr V. C. Mitchell, Donnybrook ; Messrs A. C. and C. C. Mitchell, Newlands ; Mrs Thompson Logue, Cookernup ; Mrs S. P. Nicholson, Newlands ; Mrs M. Compton, Leederville ; Mrs A. D. Courthope and Mrs C. H. Evans, Subiaco.
The funeral took place today, Canon Adams officiating. The pallbearers were Messrs. F. Prain, E. J. Wass, T. W. Paisley, J. Hislop, F. Caporn, and C. E. Reynolds.
The chief mourners were Messrs. Graves, Owen, Val., Andrew, and Clement Mitchell (sons), Mrs. Logue, Mrs. Nicholson, Mrs. Courthope (daughters), Charles and Ashley Nicholson, Stephen Mitchell (grandchildren). He leaves in all fifteen grandchildren.
