William, son of William, lived in Tiverton about a mile north of 'The Head of the River,' afterwards called Adamsville. The house was on rising ground west of the road. From the top of a large rock S. W. of the house the sea or river could be seen. He removed with his family about May, 1797, to New York State. They came up the Mohawk by scow boats pushed by setting poles. From Utica they went with teams to the old farm which had first been taken up by Thomas Brownell Simmons, though squatters had made two small clearings, one of which was called Teller's chopping... "

A Captain Niles had been on a farm further north a year or two. They built a log house on the east side of the present road. The house in which they lived was built about 1806. The nearest county was called Hamilton and towns were called by number, 1st, 2nd, etc. When they were named, Hamilton was given the 4th, also called Payne Settlement. All children were born at Tiverton except the last, Lucretia.
William Sanford served in the Revolutionary War. The Pension records at Wampsville show William was 76 years of age in 1832, served New York Militia, died 26 Oct 1837 aged 80 years, veteran of 6th Regiment Albany Co. Militia. Pensiion granted 1832. The New York Pension Rolls of 1835 at the Syracuse Library page 340 show William Sanford, Private, #79, New York Militia placed on Pension Rolls 4 September 1833, Military Record #11351. He is also given as Sgt. William Sanford. This information set [Jack Minard Sanford] by Mrs. Alice S. Cate of Syracuse. The descendants of William and Abigail (Simmons) Sanford can trace their ancestry back to John Alden and also Richard Warren of the Mayflower.
