William was son of John Williams who owned large tracts of land near Culpeper Court House. William was a vestryman of St. Mark's Parish, Virginia, from 1760 until his death in April 1775. In 1774 he was a member of the Committee of Public Safety for Culpeper County. He married, Lucy Clayton, 21 November 1755, daughter of Major Philip Clayton and Ann Coleman. There were eight children from this marriage:
John; James; Mary; Lucy; William Clayton; Philip; Elizabeth and Susannah.
