About Zalman Safern
Zalman left Europe for South America in the 1920s, but, tragically, lost his life aboard a ship as he returned to Europe from South America. Hersh and Manche moved to Kalish, but Manche died at a young age when, in their restaurant, she contracted blood poisoning after cutting open a fish. Zvi Hersh returned to Bolshvetz and married Yetta Leah Safern. In 1912, when Zvi Hersh moved his family to Berlin, Yetta moved with them, but Regina and Yitzchak stayed with Braine, their grandmother, in Bolshvetz, and later went to Vienna. Regina and Yitzchak, along with their cousin Zalman, went on hachshara in Rodges in Germany. Later, Yetta immigrated to America, while Regina and Yitzchak made aliyah to Palestine.
Below – Two namesakes of Manche: granddaughters Mona Stern and Manja Posnansky.
