• Succeeded by From 1975 to 1996, the area of the previous county lay within the Grampian Region. The county's area is now split between Moray council and Aberdeenshire council.

Banffshire or the County of Banff was a local government county of Scotland with its own county council between 1890 and 1975. The Region of Banffshire is extinct and no longer exercises administrative power, its functions and responsibilities have been transferred or absorbed by new authorities.

Banffshire was a maritime county which bordered the Moray Firth to the north, Moray and Inverness-shire to the west, and Aberdeenshire to the south. Until 1891 the county contained various exclaves which were locally situated in Aberdeenshire, the biggest being the parish and village of St. Fergus. Most of the Soiuthern section (about three-fourths of the entire length) was occupied with mountains, wooded hills and glens. The Northern district was diversified with low hills, valleys, and small tracts of rich plain.

• Cairn Gorm (4080 ft.), were situated on the SW. border.

Rivers

• Spey, with its affluent the Fiddich;
• Deveron, with its affluent the Isla;
• Boyne. There are quarries of slate and marble.

Occupations were chiefly pastoral, but many people were also employed in the fisheries.
