This project is aimed to assist researchers in understanding the terminology used in archival documents of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Russian Empire.

Family social status, occupation
- darbininkas - male worker, laborer - might be permanent or temporary.
- darbininkė - female worker, laborer.
- kampininkas - small renter, the person who doesn't own property, rents only one room.
- kareivis - soldier, lowest military rank.
- kareivis atsargoje - a soldier in reserve.
- mergelė, panelė - maiden, previously not married woman.
- našlė - widow.
- našlys - widower.
- nevedęs - unwed, previously not married male.
- sodininkas, daržininkas (огородник, халупник-RU; ogordnik, chałupnik - PL)- small landowner, the person who possessed land near his residential house, land size sufficient for gardening, not for plowing.
- padienis darbininkas - day laborer, odd-jobber, person hired for short term labor.
- mirusio, mirusios - deceased, of deceased, after deceased.
- samdinys - seasonal farm laborer, often young person from neighboring farm or peasant without property.
- šeiminkaitė, šeiminiko duktė - daughter of proprietor or manager.
- tarnaitė - maid, maidservant.
- tarnas - servant, manservant.
- tarnautojas - office worker, state or business employee, servant, official, officer.
- šeiminkaitis, šeminiko sūnus - son of proprietor or manager.
- šeimininkas - proprietor, manager, the person who hired people for help in his household or in the land.
- žemvaldys - landowner, the person who possessed a field of plowable land.
Toponymy
- bajorkaimis, akalyčia, akalica (okolica PL, околица RU) - village inhabited by nobles. It is one of the oldest territorial communities, legalized in the mid. 16th century. Their inhabitants were called szlachta okoliczna or szlachta zaściankowa (PL).
- gyvenvietė (osada, sielo PL, селение, поселение, село RU) - rural settlement.
- kaimas (wieś, wioska PL, деревня RU) - village; a settlement that is smaller than a town, usually having less than 5000 people population.
- miestelis, štetlas (miasteczko, sztetl PL, местечко, штетл RU) - town, small city, shtetl; a legal and administrative settlement unit with a commercial and craftsman or industrial specialization and a similar infrastructure to a small city.
- palivarkas, folvarkas, vysiulekas (folwark, wysiółek PL, фольварк, выселок RU) - the settlement established out of municipal or administrative boundaries that belonged to the same owner as of the main settlement; economic and administrative complex belonging to the manor.

- užusienis (zaścianek PL, застенок RU) - sort of a rural settlement in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and later in the Russian Empire, initially formed in the mid. 16th century as a result of the implemented agricultural reforms by Bona Sforza. The lands adjacent to hayfields, arable land, swamps, and settlements, remaining beyond the surveyed boundaries of crop rotation areas, were defined as "zastianok" (literal translation - beyond boundaries).
- vienkiemis (odnodworz, jednodworz? PL, односелье, хутор, заимка, однодворок RU) - one household surrounded by forest, wasteland or arable land belonging to that property, outside the common settlement border.
- viensėdis (урочище RU) - tract; a rural settlement, originated from one homestead and expanded by adding a few new homesteads. It differs from a single-family farm (vienkiemis LT) in that it has a real name and the status of an independent settlement. Although settlements with less than 3 homesteads are usually considered single-family.

- radca - court adviser, councilman, juror (tarėjas LT).
- rolniki, rolnikow - farmers, land workers, from farmers.
- syn gospodarski (ūkininko sūnus LT) - son of the farmer.
- szlachta, szlachetne, urodzonych - nobles, from noble family.
- Ur. - abr. of Urodzony - nobleman; Urodzona - noblewoman; UUr. and UUrr. - plural form, noble persons.
- wdowa - widow.
- wdowiec - widdower.
Occupation
- Ciwun Żmudzki (Žemaitijos tijūnas LT; tivunus Samogitiae LA) - Governor or Samogitia, the highest rank of aterritorial officer.
- Krajczy Żmudzki (Žemaitijos raikytojas LT; structor mensae, incisor LA; крайчий, кравчий RU), also mentioned as krawczyj - court clerk, originally responsible for slicing dishes on the royal table, then an honorary title, officer of the district.
- miecznik (ginklininkas LT) - Swordbearer, a court office in the Kingdom of Poland. Responsible for the arsenal of the King and for carrying his sword. Since the 14th Century an honorable title of the district office, in Kingdom of Poland and after Union of Lublin in Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and Livonia.
- Nadworny Sowietnik (rūmų patarėjas LT, Court Counselor EN, Надворный советник RU) - a civil rank of the 7th class in the Russian Empire. It was equal to the military ranks of lieutenant colonel in the army, captain in the guard, captain of the guards cavalry, military foreman of the Cossacks and captain of the II rank in the navy. Official address: "Your Highness". The insignia of this rank were double-lumen buttonholes or shoulder straps with three stars.

- M.D. (Magnificus Dominus) - noble person, representative of a noble house.
- mortua est, mortuus est - is dead, is deceased.
- patrini, compater - godfather.
- pauper - poor, a beggar (ubagas - LT).
- P.M.D. (Perillustrus Magnificus Dominus) - Lord, noble person, head of a noble house.
- PM (Perillustri Magnifica) - Illustrious Magnificents, Lords, noble persons.
