Before European contact, the area that today makes up Jasper County was the domain of the Osage Indians. On January 29, 1841, the Missouri Legislature enacted a bill authorizing the organization of Jasper County and was named in honor of Sergeant William Jasper, a hero in the American Revolutionary War.
