LARACHE

A SMALL TOWN ON THE COAST OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN, NORTH WEST MOROCCO.

JEWS SETTLED AT LARACHE AFTER THE EXPULSION FROM SPAIN, AT THE END OF THE 15TH CENTURY. THEY INTEGRATED into THE FIELD OF TRADE AND OCCUPIED SENIOR POSTS IN THE SERVICE OF EUROPEAN STATES WHICH MAINTAINED DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH MOROCCO. DAVID CARDOZO OF LARACHE WAS THE DEPUTY CONSUL OF SPAIN IN THE TOWN AT THE END OF THE 18TH CENTURY. THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MOSLEMS WAS GENERALLY SATISFACTORY, BUT AT THE TIME OF MULAY AL-YAZID (1790-1792) THE COMMUNITY OF LARACHE WAS THE VICTIM OF PLUNDER. IN 1809 CAME TO LARACHE JEWS WHO HAD BEEN EXPELLED FROM THE NEARBY AL-QASR AL- KABIR.

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 19TH CENTURY 250 JEWS WERE LIVING AT LARACHE. AT THE MIDDLE OF THE CENTURY THE COMMUNITY ALREADY NUMBERED 500 JEWS.

IN 1913 A SCHOOL OF ALLIANCE ISRAELITE UNIVERSELLE WAS OPENED. IN THAT YEAR THE SCHOOL HAD 325 PUPILS. IN THE CENSUS OF 1931 3,035 JEWS WERE RECORDED AT LARACHE. THE COMMUNITY MAINTAINED CLOSE RELATIONS WITH THE NEIGHBOURING COMMUNITY OF AL-QASR AL-KABIR. RABBI MOSHE MALKAH, BORN IN LARACHE IN 1911, WAS THE COMMUNITY’S RABBI IN THE YEARS 1947-1951. HE WAS ONE OF THE BETTER KNOWN SCHOLARS OF THE COMMUNITY AND IN THOSE YEARS HE SERVED ALSO AS THE RABBI OF AL-QASR AL-KABIR.

ZIONIST ACTIVITY AT LARACHE BEGAN IN THE FIRST DECADE OF THE 20TH CENTURY BUT THE FIRST ZIONIST SOCIETY “BONE YERUSHALAIM”, WAS FORMED ONLY IN 1920.

THE ARAB REVOLT IN ERETZ ISRAEL (1936-1939) AFFECTED THE DELICATE FABRIC OF RELATIONS WITH THE MOSLEM NEIGHBOURS AND THE TENSION INTENSIFIED THE ZIONIST ACTIVITY. EMISSARIES FROM ERETZ ISRAEL CAME TO LARACHE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 1940’S AND ESTABLISHED THE TEACHING OF HEBREW IN A NUMBER OF FRAMEWORKS.

ALIYAH TO ISRAEL BEGAN ONLY AFTER THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE STATE IN 1948. MOST OF THE JEWS OF LARACHE LEFT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 1950’S, AT THE TIME OF THE MOROCCAN STRUGGLE AGAINST THE FRENCH FOR INDEPENDENCE. ALL THE OTHERS DEPARTED AFTER THE INDEPENDENCE OF MOROCCO (1956) AND THE COMMUNITY WAS LIQUIDATED. Source: https://dbs.bh.org.il/place/larache
