Welcome to the Landnámabók Portal, this portal is a connection point for mini-projects focussing on the various "kafli" or chapters of the original text.
Hermann Palsson's 1972 translation is based on the Sturlubók manuscript (circa 1275) and is considered for this project as the authoritative English source.
A full English translation is openly available at northvegr.org, although the author and source is not identified.
For Danes, or those conversant in Danish, a version of the book is available in Danish at heimskringla.no.
For those fluent in Icelandic there is a full version available at the snerpa.is website.
Note: The numbering of chapters differs between versions.
Manuscripts
There are five extant manuscripts which make reference to at least two earlier versions. The original version is ascribed to Ari "the Learned" Thorgilsson and Kolskegg the Wise, but no part of their original text survives. In the version written by Styrmir Kárason the Wise ===EDITING===
