Variations in spelling

The name is spelt in numerous ways even within families. Please add variations here as they crop up.

Weeldhagen; Welthagen; Weldhagen; Wilthagen; Wiltshagen; Wildhagen; Wellhagen

Heather Graham tells me that there were six different spellings in the bapt. records for the 10 children of Petrus Jacobus Albertus Welthagen b1c6 b.1843 - “Welthagen” "Welthage" "Wiltenhage" "Willenhage" "Wiltenhagen" "Wilthagen"

The purpose of this project is to establish the most accurate tree possible for the descendants of Johan Fredrik Wildhagen, SV/PROG who arrived at the Cape c1793 in the service of the VOC.

The tree as it appears on Geni is in need of "fine tuning" and correction through locating relevant documents and sources, something that would probably be most achievable through collaboration of interested parties. By starting a project page linked to this man's profile we can pool resources and avoid duplicate work. Documents can be added to the project and shared. I believe that the table in SAG is flawed and would like to get the tree on Geni as accurate as possible.

Plan of Action

The immediate objective is to accurately record the first 4 generations, establishing a solid foundation to build the subsequent descending branches from.

Johann Friedrich Weldhagen Born c. 1760, arrived before 1794 from Hannover, Germany, 1820 owner of a shop in Langestraat, Cape Town. Died dist. Cape Town 14.10.1828 (68.-); Married NGK Cape Town 24.8.1817 Helena Johanna Vioroni daughter of Giuseppe (Joseph) Anthonio Vioroni and Magdalena van Ellewee.

The following has been gleaned from notes contributed in 2013 by Laurence Browning, Leichlingen, Germany, who will visit these places and check in the local church records if they had recorded any Welthagens.

Johan Frederik Welthagen is shown in the GISA records, using the German spelling, born about 1760 in Hannover, Germany. I have also seen reference to his birthplace being Hannoversch Münden (further south than Hannover). As it is not certain how literate the people where in those days, or whether they only verbally gave their details to the authorities when arriving in South Africa, there may have been some incorrect spelling of the name Welthagen, as Wildhagen. There are a number of Wildhagens living in Germany, but so far I have not located any living Welthagens. There is reference to a Philipp Jakob Welthagen born in 1720 in Dienethal, Germany who moved to and died in what is now Romania. He only had a daughter so his family name did not carry on.
There are no passenger lists showing any Welthagens arriving in South Africa between 1760 and 1860. There is a record in the VOC (Dutch East India Co.) archives of a Johan Fredrik Wildhagen (born in Twiste, Germany) who arrived on a VOC ship in 1793. See http://vocopvarenden.nationaalarchief.nl/detail.aspx?ID=1422098.
Johann Frederich married Helena Johanna Vioroni (also shown as Virioni, Viorini) in the NG Kerk, Cape Town on 24.07.1817.
NOTE -The Geni tree shows Helena Vioroni and Johann Frederich as having had 8 children. The first 4 of Johannes Chtristiaan Frederik (Christiaan Fredrik), b1; Frederika Maria Johanna, b2; Jan Adriaan Frederik, b3; Helena Johanna Rosina, b4 must have been children of his first wife, as they were born before 1817.

RESPONSE The DN of Helena Johanna Rosina Virouni names the following as "children of the deceased" - Fredrica (Major); Jan; Leentje; William; Frans; Godlieb and Annie (Minors). This, together with baptisms so far located confirm that all but Johannes Christiaan Frederik Welthagen, b1 were of the 2nd relationship, although the marriage did not take place until 1817; Helena Johanna is named "van de Kaap" in some of the baptisms so far located.

Note *** from Heather Graham – no bapt. record found yet, so no DoB. Calculations from her records are:

- marriage (1) 1879 – age 20* = born 1859 (*with parents’ permission “Toestemming: De Ouers”)
- marriage (2) 1883 – age 22* = born 1861 (*major “meerderjaardig”)
- death notice 1902 – age 45 = born 1856

Meerderjaardig was 21 at that time. So, as Johanna needed her parents’ permission when she married Oct.1879, she was definitely under 21, i.e. born 1859.

Married firstly 1879
Married secondly 9 April 1883 Gabriël Jacobus Kotze

Corney Keller of eGGSA had a look at this inventory and made the following observations -

The only conclusions I can draw from this inventory is that:

  1. - His heirs are unknown and abroad (onbekende uitlandige erfgenamen)
  2. - He lived in her house, however the relationship between them is not mentioned, suggesting he could have been a boarder.
  3. - He could have been a musician (een forte piano, een bas, twee fiolen, een party muziek boeken, twee musiek lessenaars)
  4. - She took the inventory

1. Aletta Elizabeth Francina Welthagen, b1c3d5 daughter of Leendert Gerhardus Hendrikus Weldhagen, b1c3 and Amarensia Blignaut

AND

2. NOT LISTED Aletta Elisabetha Francina Welthagen daughter of Frederick Albertus Welthagen, b1c4 and Emmarentie Fredrika Vorster

There is an error in the entry for 1. - she is listed as being married to Jacobus Alwyn Kruger and Barend Jacobus Fourie. Jacobus Alwyn Kruger WAS married to an Aletta Elizabeth Francina Welthagen but NOT the daughter of Leendert Gerhardus Hendrikus Weldhagen, b1c3 and Amarensia Blignaut. She was the daughter of Leendert's brother, Frederick Albertus Welthagen, b1c4, and his wife Emmarentie Fredrika Vorster. This daughter is not listed in the GISA table. See her DN attached to her profile.
