When the family emigrated from Germany they used the name as Butz. Later, when Americans were fighting Germany the family wanted a name that sounded less German so they changed it to Butts. At least this is what my father told me. I grew up with the last name of Butts and would much more have liked to be a Butz. The surname is supposed to carry the meaning of "One who lives by the small stream" (known as a butz).
