A Dutch surname. Our family fled Holland in the 14th century probably to escape the Inquisition. They entered England and resided at Bristol. The spelling of the name was quite different from today's spelling. An ancestor was burned at the stake in Bristol in 1395 for heresy.
It seems the family fled to Cheshire and we have a continuous lineage there from about 1600 from Thomas Fluitt.
They entered the American Colonies in the 1780's and applied for citizenship in Charleston, SC in 1784.
There is a single progenitor for this family, Samuel Fluitt (1774-1855). Today we have cataloged about 400 male descendants. Most are in Texas, Louisiana and California. We need to reconnect with the Netherlands family. Clyde Fluitt, Waco, Texas (clydefluitt@gmail.com)
