My 3XGreat Grandfather was Alvaro Gavino. He had many children but one of his children, Nepomeceno Gavino was my 2XGreat Grandfather. During the Spanish period, they decreed that Gavino's from a geographical line from San Juan, La Union to Cervantes, Ilocos Sur, change their names and the family selected Gaerlan. My Great Grandfather was Sabas Mansano Gaerlan and his son Crispin was my Grandfather. Jose Bondad Gaerlan was my father via a marriage by Crispin Gaerlan to Margarita Bondad.
Nepomeceno Gavino sent his son Sabastian (Sabas) to study with the first priest of San Juan named Mariano Gaerlan and due to this education he worked for the Spanish as a translator and administrator for them in the Mountain Provinces and Ilocos Sur. It was also at this time that the Spanish decreed the name change. I don't know if the name change occured during Nepomeceno's time or during the time of Sabas but it may have been during Nepomeceno's time.
