About the Grisham surname

From what I have found back when William the conqueror invaded England he had a low night named the branch who rode with him I guess he did such a good job that he was granted lands in England in a town called grissom years later his descendants travel to America and years later his descendants went to school and was told that his name should be spelled with an i instead of an e and that's how they started spelling it that's one story and other story I heard is that the branch was given land in a town in England and Han was added to the name because it denoted land ownership and another theory I heard is that the ones who changed the spelling to an eye is because they didn't want to be associated with the ones who spelled it with an e because during the revolutionary war the ones who spelled it with an e were loyal to England while the ones who spelled it with an I fought for the Americans
