  • John Smith b: 1622. Traveled with Alice Smith on the Planter, 1635. They were listed with the Hasfell / Haffield family, who had a certificate from Sudbury in Suffolk (Alice's certificate was from Sidbury in Devon). John is not mentioned widow Alice's estate of 1663, but there is not proof that he is deceased before then, either.

Warning!

Please see Robert Charles Anderson FASG, "John Smith of Watertown, Massachusetts," The American Genealogist (1985) Vol 61 p 18 Daniel Smith is not the son of John Bland Smith.

The father of John Smith was JOHN SMITH and his mother was ALICE BARNES MARRYON (widow). He was baptized at Saint Mary's Parish Church in Hadleigh, Suffolk County, England which was Church of England

Conformity certificate to allow Alice Smith and son John Smith to leave England:

The port record showed JOHN SMITH age 13 and ALICE SMITH age 40 traveled with a family by the name of Haffield. In this family there was the father, mother and 5 daughters. In the group were also an Elizabeth Cooper age 24 and Job Hawkins age 17. These were both common names in the Suffolk area. The record showed they were headed for Ipswich in New England. They traveled on the ship "Planter" Nicholas Trerice, Master which departed London on 10 April 1635 and arrived in Boston on 7 June 1635.

You may ask what happened to ALICE SMITH age 40 and widowed twice. She would in all probability quickly marry, especially in view of the shortage of women. So after her marriage her name would not appear anywhere as SMITH. women did not receive a land grant so there is nothing in the Ipswich records. Unfortunately I have not found anything further about ALICE SMITH.
