Born about 1620 (aged 15 on 10 August 1635) (but this may be a slight underestimate, inasmuch as he was received as an inhabitant of Portsmouth and was granted land there in 1639), son of Richard and Jane (_____) Hawkins.

Carpenter who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1635 on the "Planter." (On 10 April 1635, "Job Hawkins," aged 15, was enrolled at London as a passenger for New England on the Planter).

First settled in Boston, moved to Portsmouth RI in 1639, back to Boston MA by 1646, Newport RI by 1666, & Portsmouth RI in 1669. Died after 6 March 1681/2.

Married by 1646 Frances _____.

On 12 March 1637/8, "Jane Hawkins, the wife of Rich[a]rd Hawkins, had liberty till the beginning of the third month, called May, & the magistrates (if she did not depart before) to dispose of her; & in the meantime she is not to meddle in surgery, or physic, drinks, plasters, or oils, nor to question matters of religion, except with the elders for satisfaction." On 22 May 1651, "[i]n answer to the petition of James, Jobe & Thomas Hawkins for the return for their mother to live in this jurisdiction, the Court, not knowing how to satisfy themselves about this woman, cannot give way to her coming into this jurisdiction."

Richard Hawkins and his wife Jane resided in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. In her will, dated 30 July 1659, "Jane Hawkins widow to Richard Hawkins of Portsmouth late deceased" bequeathed to "her son James her eldest son," to "her son Thomas Hawkins," to "her maid Mary Brayton," and to "her son-in-law Thomas Brooke."

The earliest New England records for JAMES HAWKINS and JOB HAWKINS are in 1635. THOMAS HAWKINS and RICHARD HAWKINS and his wife Jane may also have arrived in the same year, but we have no evidence of them until 1636 or later.

Job and his brother James arrived by 1635. Their parents arrived somewhat later, and Job joined them in Portsmouth before returning to Boston around the time of his marriage in the 1640s. He seems to have moderately successful until about 1665, when he returned to Rhode Island in somewhat reduced circumstances. He had two children in Boston, but there is no further record of either.

notes

Richard [Hawkins] must have died shortly after [1655] because on 25 Aug 1656, "Job Hawkins of Boston, Carpenter", sold the 20 acre lot, and his mother Jane Hawkins, "late wife of Richard Haukins, aforesaid deceast... doe disclaime all my Right and title to the above sayed land"
