Sanford married twice, first to Elizabeth Webb, who at one time lived at Groton Manor, the home of John Winthrop in England;[5] this marriage produced two children. Following Elizabeth's death, Sanford married Bridget, the daughter of William Hutchinson and his famous wife, Anne (Marbury) Hutchinson, this marriage producing nine children, many of whom died young.[6]

Major Phillips had three wives: Mary, by whom he had one son and two daughters; Susanna, widow of Chris. Susanna Stanley, on 10 Sep 1650, by whom he also had one son and two daughters, probably; and Bridget, on 10 Mar 1657, widow of John Sanford, by whom he had three sons. His third wife survived him.
