About Jane Grant

Biography
Hannah, daughter of Thomas and Jane (Haburne) Grant, was baptized on October 16, 1631 at St. Mary the Virgin Church in Cottingham, Yorkshire, England.[1][2]

In the 1630s, Rev. Ezekiel Rogers was rector at St. Peter’s Church in Rowley, East Riding, Yorkshire before he was suspended for his Puritan practices. In response, Rev. Rogers gathered almost thirty Puritan families from the area, including the Grant family, and emigrated to New England in 1638. Hannah along with her parents and siblings (John, Frances and Anne) were aboard the ship "John of London" as part of this group in the Great Puritan Migration. [1] On July 20, 1698, Samuel Stickney Sr. gave sworn testimony that the Grant family was among the passengers when he emigrated to New England.[1][3]

"I Sam Stickney Sr. of Bradford do testify and say That I came over from England to New England in the same ship wth Thomas Grant & Jane Grant his Wife, who brought over with them Foure Children, by name John, Hannah, Frances, & Ann, -whome I was well acquainted with, & next or near neighbours unto in Rowley. And ye said John being deceased, I do affirm that the Sisters of John Grant above named, now by marriage known by ye names of Hannah Browne, Frances Keyes, & Ann Emerson are ye same yt came over with their Father & Mother, & by them owned with said John for their children." Sworn to 20 July, 1698. (Proem vii)[4]
After arriving in Boston, Massachusetts a number of the families went on to settle in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[5]

In March 1650,[6] Hannah Grant (age about 18) married as his second wife, Edward Hazen (age about 36). Edward had settled in Rowley before 1649 and had become a man of substance and influence in the town.[3][7] The family lived in Rowley on the west side of Central Street on a lot that Edward had purchased from John Smith.[8] Edward Hazen (age 68) predeceased Hannah and was buried in Rowley on July 22, 1683.[6] Besides his widow, Edward left nine living children including four minor children -- Edna (age 16), Richard (age 13), Hepzibah (age 11) and Sarah (age 9). Edward Hazen's estate was distributed to his widow Hannah, their nine living children and the husband of deceased daughter, Hannah, as follows:

sons Thomas, Edward and Richard Hazen
daughters Edna, Hepzibah and Sarah Hazen
William Gibson, husband of deceased daughter Hannah
John and Isabel Wood
Nathaniel and Elizabeth Harris
Jeremiah and Priscilla Pearson[9]
On March 17, 1683/4, widow Hannah (age 52) married widower Lt. George Browne (age about 61) of Haverhill.[10][2] Sometime between 1684 and 1692, George Browne was promoted from Lieutenant to Captain.[11] On September 9, 1693, Capt. George Browne adopted Hannah's youngest son Richard "as sole heir to his large estate."[3]

According to his tombstone, Capt. Browne died October 30, 1699, aged seventy-six years.[3][10] He is buried at Pentucket Cemetery in Haverhill.[12] In George's will, dated June 16, 1699, he left bequests to, among others:

my now wife Hannah, executrix
my adopted son Richard Hazen, son of Hannah, executor
Sarah, wife of Daniel Wicom, my wife's daughter [13]
Hannah (age about 84) died February 1715/16 in Haverhill.[3][10] She is thought to be buried in the Pentucket Cemetery in Haverhill alongside her second husband, Capt. George Brown.[14] No tombstone exists for Hannah.
