Church Registers - Stellenbosch Congregation, Consulted as microfilm at the LDS and as Palmkronieke facsimile, Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk Argief, Stellenbosch, G2/7/1 marriages 1700-1786;
baptisms, page 25

  • Anna Catrina, d'Moeder Doretha Oelofs buyten egt, gepresenteert 19 Juny 1707

She was baptised Anna Catharina, an illegitimate child. Dr J.Hoge, in his 'Bydraes tot die Genealogies van Ou Afrikaanse Families, A.A.Balkema, 1958, says that she is the same person who was later known as Johanna Catharina Campher. This sort of confusion, probably of hearing on the part of the koster, is not unusual in the baptismal registers.

In the church register, the minister recorded that, during the wedding ceremony, she held in her arms a child who, that same day, had been baptised Katharina, in order to legitimise her, and that between the couple stood another child whose name was not known to him.
