Family

John married in England to an unknown wife, about 1627, and they had a daughter, Esther, and three sons, John, Nathaniel and Samuel. His first wife died on an unknown date.

John Crow married second, about 1640, Elizabeth Goodwin,[2] "only child of Elder William Goodwin, one of the pioneers, proprietors and settlers of Hartford, and one of its largest land owners."[3] They had six daughters, and a son, all born in Hartford, Connecticut.

He [Goodwin] came to America in 1634; and was one of those who went through the Wilderness with Rev. Thomas Hooker, 1638; and settled Hartford. His name is on the monument in the Hartford cemetery, erected in memory of the first settlers there. John was a wealthy man, associated in business with his father-in-law, Elder Goodwin, Hartford; and was one of the founders and settlers of Hadley, Mass., 1659.

His sons were dissipated and squandered their property. His daughters married some of the ablest men in the Colony.

All the children's birth dates are estimates, usually determined by marriage dates. There are no records for the births of his children; they are named in his will. Relatively little vital information is available for this family.

The following are children of John Crow, thought to be of his first wife (name unknown):

  1. Esther, born 1628; married 1655, Giles Hamlin, Esq, of Middletown; died August 25, 1700, aged 72.
  2. John, lived in Fail-field; was a merchant in the West India trade; died at sea, 1667, without children.
  3. Samuel, married May 17, 1671, Hannah, daughter of Capt. William Lewis, of Farmington; slain at Fall's fight, May 18, 1676
  4. Nathaniel, lived in East Hartford; married Deborah ____; died July 30, 1695; his widow married Andrew Warner, of Hartford, afterward of Windham.

The following are children of John Crow, thought to be of his second wife, Elizabeth Goodwin:

  1. Elizabeth, born 1644; married (1) William Warren, of Hartford; (2) Phineas Wilson, of Hartford, a wealthy merchant from Dublin; he died May 22, 1692, and after his death she continued his business, and became the most extensive banker in the Colony. She was accustomed to loan money on mortgage not only to citizens of Hartford, but in the adjacent towns, and she managed her affairs with wisdom and judgment. She died July 9 or 19, 1727, aged 86 (?), leaving a large property and many legacies,
  2. Sarah, born March I, 1646-7, in Hartford; married November 1, 1661, Daniel White, of Hatfield; died June 29, 1719, aged 72.
  3. Anne, or Hannah, born July 13, 1649; married March 7, 1667-8, Thomas Dickinson; he was one of the first settlers of Hadley, but removed to Wethersfield in 1679; died there, 1716.
  4. Mehitabel, born about 1652; married September 24, 1668, Colonel Samuel Partridge, of Hadley and Hatfield; died December 8, 1730, aged 78.
  5. Mary, married (1) December 27, 1666, Noah Coloman, of Hatfield; (2) September 16, 1680, Peter Montague, of Hadley; she died October 12, 1720
  6. Ruth, married (1) December 21, 1671, William Gaylord, of Hadley; (2) about 1681, John Haley, of Hadley.
  7. Daniel, born about 1656; lived in Hartford; died August 12, 1693, aged 37, without children.

Research Notes

Most of the birth dates of John Crow's children are estimates, and Nathaniel is usually listed fourth. However, based on known birth dates, ages at death, and marriage dates, their birth order is probably: Esther (d. 1700, age 72), John (d. 1667), Samuel (m. 1671), Elizabeth (b. 1644), Mary (m. 1666), Sarah (b. 1 Mar 1646/7), Hannah/Anna (b. 13 Jul 1649), Ruth (m1. 1671), Mehitable (d. 1730, age 78), Nathaniel (m. c1684), and Daniel (d. 1693, age 37).

If Nathaniel was born as early as 1634, he would have been over 50 when his first child was born in 1685. More likely his birth was between 1642 and 1656 which means his mother was John Crow's second wife Elizabeth Goodwin.

“Christopher Crow isn't listed in histories as a child of John Crow; he died before John and is most likely his son.”

Note, Hadley was founded in 1659. Samuel was likely born at Newtowne (later named Cambridge) Massachusetts, where his father John Crow and the other original proprietors of Hartford lived prior to their journey to establish Hartford May 31, 1636. John Crow and Samuel accompanied Samuel's grandfather, William Goodwin, when he left Hartford to establish Hadley in 1659.[2]
