More about Joseph Knight:

JOSEPH (1624-1687) a Farmer was born in Romsey, England. He married Hannah Lamb in Watertown, MA. In 1649, Joseph and Hannah sold a mansion and about 9½ acres of land in Watertown to John Bigelow. Joseph soon moved to Woburn, where he agreed to take the Oath of Freeman or Citizenship, in 1652.
Joseph believing that a well-regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the proper, natural, and safe defense of a free State. He believed standing armies, in time of peace, should be avoided, as they are dangerous to liberty. That in all cases the military should be under strict subordination, governed by the civil power. Joseph served in King Philip's War of 1675 to 1676, under Captain James Oliver.

Joseph died on the thirtieth day of August 1687, at Woburn, Massachusetts. Administration of his estate was granted to his son, Joseph Knight, Junior on the twenty-fifth day of September 1687. (The New England Historical and Genealogical Register Volume 7.)
