James Wilkinson Penrose was born in Missouri, in 1808; died at Plattsburgh Barracks, New York, 1 January 1849. He was appointed a cadet at the United States Military Academy, 1 July 1824, from which he graduated and became second lieutenant in the 2d infantry, 1 July, 1828. He married, at Madison Barracks, New York, 30 December, 1827, Mary Ann, daughter of General William Hoffman, of the United States Army. In 1829 he served in garrison at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri; in 1829-1832, at Sackett's Harbor, NY; in 1832 at Fort Dearborn, Illinois and in the Black Hawk war against the Sac Indians; in 1833, at Fort Dearborn and at Fort Brady, Michigan and from that mite until 1836 at Fort Mackinac, Michigan. He entered service in the war in Florida against the Seminole Indians. He was wounded at Cerro Gordo, in consequence of which he was ordered to Plattsburgh Barracks, where he died from the effects of the Mexican War.
