About Dr Mark Dugald Stark

In 1881 was living in Portway Place, Newbury Street, Wantage. Had 2 servants.

Lived at 6 Broad Street, Oxford, 1891-1906. (Lately an enterprise called The Oxford Story and more recently a Cath Kidston store). Had governess and 3 servants.

From 'The Canadian Practitioner' 1906 - "Dr. M. D. Stark, of Oxford, England, died at Torquay, Devonshire, March 6th. He received his preliminary education at Dundas and Gait, and graduated from Trinity University in 1875. After he received his British qualifications he was appointed a surgeon on a steamer going from London to Egypt, India and China. On retiring from the steamship service he practiced for a short time in Berkshire, and then went to Oxford, where he formed a partnership with Mr. Sankey, surgeon."

His death came only three months after that of his brother, Wm Geddes Stark, in the USA. There is a suggestion in the family that his death may have been suicide due to financial worries. The family had lived well, largely due to financial input from the wealthy Wienholts (his wife' s family) in Australia. However, the money dried up when a drought of many years caused financial difficulties for the pastoralist Wienholts. Requests for financial help from his family in Canada were unsuccessful.

Probate was granted on 20 April to his widow. Effects: £1,968 0s 8d.

Buried in St Sepulchre's Cemetery, Oxford (Row 11, Section C, grave 48½).
