About Rosa Ellen Gallagher Bonnell
In the 1870 census Rose is 9 years old. She was born about 1861. Both of Rose's parents were born in Ireland. Daniel Gallagher and Eliza according to Aunt Carol, “I have one of Grandma Bonnell's Bible that shows her (Roses) date of birth and DOD”. For another source see the census reports in Sources or Media tabs.
The Gallagher's resided in Manitowoc in the town of Newton. In 2017, (Sherre) drove to the town of Newton and the Manitowoc library and found the platt records for the property and farm that Rose grew up on. (see Source documents attached) I drove to the near points of the property which looked like farm land. My mom Shirley Bonnell remembered going to the Gallagher’s as a young teen for a wedding. She thought she stayed at one of her aunts homes.
Rose Ellen was born in Newton township in 1861. Her father Daniel Gallagher dies in 1870 when she was about 9 years old. She lives with her siblings and mom next door to her cousins and Uncle Michael Gallagher and aunt Catherine. Rose Ellen met George C. Bonnell while she was keeping house for her brother in Antigo. Rose and George are pioneers and the first of Antigo to be married about Nov 14, 1886/87? They had to go to Wausau to be married as Antigo was not yet a town. They had 7 children according to census records. The last born son, Clinton was ready to go off to college at age 18, but his father died that year and he decided to stayed on the farm, run the farm and took care of his mom and brother. Rose and George's grand daughter, Shirley Bonnell Servi was born in the same house. Shirley recalls stories that her Grandfather had built the farm house with the help of his brothers and Rose's brothers. Shirley said it was built all by hand and had a front porch. There was a cook stove in the middle of the first floor and it was the only heat of the house. Winters were very cold and the kids all slept near the stove pipe up on the 2nd floor.
1900 census attached. Roses’ birth date is listed in the 1900 census as Mar 1867. Written pretty clearly.
In the 1900 and 1905 census extended family members are living with George and Rosa Bonnell. 2 of George's brothers. Their is also a 15year old Niece Mae/May/Mary Furlong who lives with them for both of these census. Mae/Mary Furlong then age 22 is living with Bridget, Rosa's sister in the 1910 census. Could this be a daughter of their older sister Mary Gallagher? There is a Mary Furlong Barta living in Manitowoc soon after.
