Born about 1620 in Great Amwell, England. He was baptized on Nov 5, 1620 in Great Amwell. He died about July 24, 1693 in South Hingham, MA. Son of Captain John Johnson and his first wife, Mary Heath.

Married first Ellen/Elinor/Eleanor Cheney who was born 1626 in Roxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts. They married on March 20, 1642. She died on Sept 28 1678. Married second Abigail Stansfield May in 1679. She was the widow of Samuel May. She died after May 14, 1714.

Sergeant Humphrey Johnson of Roxbury

Genealogy of Captain John Johnson of Roxbury, Mass, Generations I to XIV, by Paul Franklin Johnson, Editor 1945 p.6: " . . .Came from England with his father, Captain John. He was a capable man in town affairs and often employed in the public business. He had an uncommon inclination to law suits and few men have left on the records of the court, so many evidences of his litigeous disposition."

He settled in Scituate, Mass., and later was of Hingham, Mass where he was an Inkeeper. He was a member of his brother's Company in the Narrangansett Expedition. He was an original donor of the Free School. His farm house in Scituate was in later years owned by Joshua Lincoln into whose family there was much intermarrying. Sgt. in company commanded by brother Isaac. An original donor of the Free School at Roxbury, he moved about 1651 to Scituate, MA.

At the Court of his Matie, held at Plymouth ye 2d of march 1680/1681 Mr Humphry Johnson of Hingham and John Thomas made oath to ye truth of this will; viz, That the Testator did Declare unto them that this will before signed and sealed by him was and is the last will and Testament of him the said Josiah Winslow Esqr. late Deceased

His daughter Mehitable lived a rather unfortunate life, her first husband being killed by the Indians on the same day as the Battle at Bloody Brook, and her second husband also killed by the Indians. John, another of his sons, drown at Hingham Mass.

He was married to Abigal MAY (STANSFULL) on 6 Dec 1678 in Roxbury, MA.(1577) (1578) The "Heath Connection" says she is the widow of Samuel May.

On 20 July, 1688, "we Humphery Johnson And Abigail my wife in the Township of Hingham in the County of Suffolk .... New England .... in Consideration of the love and naturall affection which we hear unto our Children John and Deborah Johnson .... do absolutely Confirme to our Son John Johnson and Deborah Johnson . All that our hundred acres of land in Scituate Called Burnt Plaine as it is Confirmed

By Pattent, To them or the longer liver of them if John Dye before he attaine to the age of twenty one years or marriage or Deborah Dye before the age of Eighteen years or marriage . Also we Do give and graunt together with the land aforesaid a priviledge in the Comons of Scituate a Right of Improvement in Comons Equall with the Sons of the ancient Inhabitants that are proprietors in the Comons or undivided land in Scituate aforesaid but if Either of the Childred dye as Aforesaid the Survivor to Enjoy all the lands and proffits And Abigail my wife James Witton Senr and Elisha Besbey both of Hingham are hereby Requested and Impowered as Overseers or Feoffees in trust for and in behalf of the Children for the Improvement of the land and proffits thereof for the benifit of the Childre aforesaid

Also we Humphery Johnson and Abigail my wife do Revoak and Release all Right that we have by Pattent or otherwise to the said hundred acres of Land .... onely I Humphery Johnson Do Reserve of Improvement of part of the land During my naturall life about twenty acres or 25 acres but the title of the Hundred acres is Confimed to my two Children .... they or their Assignes paying yearly the proportion of the Quitilcut expressed in our Pattent it is to be understood that the said Humphery Johnson is not to sell or waste the Timber on the land aforesaid farther then for present Improvement for fencing or planting the land and whereas it is expressed I have liberty to Improve part of the land aforesaid it is to be understoode I have liberty to Choose my place taking it together . The proportion of quitt Rent being one shilling and eight pence yearly which according to pattent is to be paid Annually upon the Day of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary"

The deed was signed by Humphery Johnson, and by "Abigail Johnson Senior" (by a mark). It was witnessed by Robert Dunbar, Sr. (by a mark), Nathaniel Johnson and Isaac Johnson.

On 24 May, 1690, Humphrey Jolmson and Abigail Johnson, Sr., acknowledged the deed, before John Smith, Assistant.

On 20 July, 1688, "possession was Given of the hundred acres within Specified by Turf and twigg by Humphery Jolmson And Abigail my wife by turf and twigg to John Johnson and Deborah Jolmson within mentioned". Signed by Humphery Johnson, and by "Abigail Johnson Senr" (by a mark), and witnessed by Robert Dunbar, Sr. (by a mark), Nathaniel Johnson and Isaac Johnson.

The deed was recorded, 9 June, 1690.

Humphrey was a soldier in Captain Isaac Johnson's Company in the war against King Phillip in 1675.

Johnson moved from Roxbury to Hingham.

He was a member of his brother's company in the Narragansett Expedition. He was an original donor of the free school. His farm house in Scituate, was in later years owned by Joshua Lincoln into whose family there was much intermarying.
