About Sir James Schaw of Sauchie

James Schaw of Sauchie was in the late 1400's commander of the garrison of Stirling Castle during a difficult time in Scotland's history. He was Knighted for his services by the Scottish king.

Family

James Schaw was born in Sauchie, Clackmannshire, Scotland, and died JAN 1528. He was the son of John Shaw of Alveth and heir to his grandfather, James Schaw of Sauchie (d 1491). Of age in 1502.

  2. Alison Home, daughter of Patrick Home and Margaret St. Clair. She was born in Polwarth, Berwickshire, Scotland, and was living in 1526.

Gordon A. MacGregor writes: "SIR JAMES SCHAW OF SAUCHIE, succeeded his father and had a charter from James, Lord Haliburton, for the lands of Auchengownie, in the barony of Forgandenny, on 2 February, 1502. He m. Alison, daughter of Sir Patrick Home of Polwarth, with whom he had a charter under the Great Seal for the lands of Greenock-Schaw on 4 December, 1506, and d. in January of 1528. He was father of

  • 1. Alexander Schaw of Sauchie who had a charter under the Great Seal for the lands of Westerton of Tillicoultry on 8 May, 1513, and succeeded his father in the lands of Sauchie. He m. Elizabeth, daughter of William Cunningham of Glengarnock, with whom he had a charter of confirmation under the Great Seal for the lands of Wester Greenock-schaw on 14 January, 1540. He d. by July of 1549.
  • 2. John Schaw, witness to an instrument of Sasine for the lands of Greenock-schaw in favour of his brother Alexander Schaw of Sauchie, on 21 February, 1540."

"Sir James Schaw, grandson of the aforementioned James Schaw, whilst Keeper of Stirling Castle, denied James III access to his son the Duke of Rothesay and was later implicated in the conspiracy which ultimately led to the kings demise at Sauchieburn. James was pardoned by James IV and reinstated as Keeper of Stirling Castle."

Can someone point me toward good sources of information about SirJames Shaw of Sauchie, father of Janet Shaw who married Sir Archibald Edmonstone of Duntreath in about 1479? He appears to have been Governor of Stirling Castle, royal guardian, and Ambassador to England during the 1470s. I'm guessing he was born say about 1430. And, he may have married Christian Bruce of Clackmannan. ...

"James Shaw-had sasine of the lands of Greenock- Shaw " as heir of the deceased James Shaw of Sauchy, his grandfather, who died infeft in the lands of Greenock- Schaw, which had been in the king's hands by the space of one year, 1492, so that old James, the grand- father, has died in 1491, and left, probably by John Shaw of Alva, his son, so called in the records of 1488, James, his oye, who was his heir." "Alexander Shaw, then apparent of Sauchie, granted to John Shaw, his brother, a Charter of the liferent of the lands of Ryal, to which his seal is appended ; on which Crawfurd remarks, that this is the first John Shaw of Broich for certain, the date is 151 1. (Notes of Sauchie Writs.) He had a Crown Charter of the Westertown of Tulliecultre, &c, in which he is designed son and heir of James Shaw of Sauchy, knight, 8 May, 1513. (Reg. Mag. Sig., Lib. 18, No. 195.) As son and heir of the deceased Sir James Shaw of Sauchy, knight, he gave in a supplication to the king, which was granted, that in regard his lands lay in different shires he might be infeft in Clackmannan for all, 21 January, 1528. He was retoured to Sir James Shaw of Sauchie, his father, in the half lands of the barony of Sauchie, with tower and fortalice of the same, then in the superior's hands for two months, 4 March, 1528, so that the father had died in January, 1528.
