About Thomas Rudd, Convict "Earl Cornwallis" 1801
Kevin Rudd is of English and Irish descent.[9] His paternal 4th great-grandparents were English and of convict heritage: Thomas Rudd and Mary Cable (she was from Essex). Thomas arrived from London, England in 1801, Mary in 1804. Thomas Rudd, a convict, arrived in NSW on board the Earl Cornwallis in 1801. He was convicted of stealing a bag of sugar. Check out the Old Bailey Court records available online for the details. Thomas was granted 50 acres of land at Airds, now known as Campbelltown on the 20th June 1816. By 1828 Thomas owned 170 acres, with 50 acres cleared and under cultivation. He had 18 cattle and 1 horse. He had petitioned Govenor Brisbane for an increase in acreage in 1823. His block of land was situated in the Eagle Vale area of Campbelltown. There are no streets named after Thomas senior in this area but Leumeah was the property of Joseph Rudd, son of William Rudd and Emma Terry. According to some records Thomas received the 'Maryfields' property from Father John Therry when he left Campbelltown. This property was gifted to the Catholic Church by descendants. "Maryfields' is located next to the Hume Highway ,off Narellan Road. The old Tramway to Camden used to have a railway station at Maryfields so visitors could go to the Stations of the Cross services held there. See further notes on John Rudd regarding this property.
