About William Ruthven, Writer in Edinburgh

WILLIAM RUTHVEN (aka WILLIAME RUTHVEN)

TWO FAKE PEDIGREES

First

At least one pedigree published by MyHeritage falsely claims that William Ruthven, here treated, is the son of William, fourth Lord Ruthven, and Mary Gray. It would appear that this proposition may be founded upon the author's misreading or misunderstanding of the Scots Peerage account of the life of William, Lord Ruthven. William, fourth Lord Ruthven, and Mary Gray had been contracted to marry, possibly when they were children, but the marriage did not actually take place. The Scots Peerage: 263

THE FAKE PEDIGREE PUBLISHED BY MYHERITAGE FOLLOWS:

Mary Seaton (born Gray), 1540 - 1600. Mary Seaton (born Gray) was born in 1540, at birth place, to Patrick Gray and Marion Gray (born Ogilvy). Patrick was born in February 1508, in Buttergask, Perthshire, Scotland. Marion was born in 1514, in Airlie, Angus, Scotland. Mary had 9 siblings: Patrick Gray, Katherine Mortimer (born Gray) and 7 other siblings. Mary married David Seton of Parbroath. David was born circa 1535, in Of, Parbroath, Fife, Scotland. His occupation was Comptroller of Scotland 1589. MARY MARRIED WILLIAM RUTHVEN. William was born in 1528, in Ruthven, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. THEY HAD ONE SON: WILLIAM RUTHVEN. Mary passed away in 1600, at age 60 at death place. MyHeritage

Second

At least one pedigree published by MyHeritage falsely claims that it was William Ruthven, here treated, who married Marion Clerksone and had a son named William Alexander Ruthven. For two reasons this is wrong. In the first place. William, fourth Lord Ruthven, and Mary Gray did not have a son named William Ruthven [see above]. In the second place. There is no such person as William Alexander Ruthven. His existence depends upon the mistaken belief that William Ruthven is the same person as Alexander Ruthven, both of whom were married to a lady named Isobel Reid. Moreover, William Ruthven, here treated, is said to have died in Colonial Virginia in 1674, a claim which suggests that he has been confused with William Ruffin a man who has absolutely no connection with the Ruthven family.

THE FAKE PEDIGREE PUBLISHED BY MY HERITAGE FOLLOWS

WILLIAM ALEXANDER RUTHVEN, 1613 - 1674. William Alexander Ruthven was born on month day 1613, at birth place, to William Ruthven and Marion Ruthven (born Clerksone). William was born in 1566, in Gowrie, Perth, Perth and Kinross, Scotland. Marion was born circa 1590, in Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. William was baptized on month day 1613, at baptism place. He had 4 siblings: Bessie Ruthven and 3 other siblings. William married Isobel or Isoble Reid - Ruthven. Isobel was born on November 16 1626, in Montrose, Angus, Scotland, United Kingdom. They had 4 children: George John (Reid) Ruthven and 3 other children. William lived at address.William passed away on month day 1674, at age 60 at death place, Virginia. He was buried at burial place, Virginia. MyHeritage
