About Sarah Lee

Sarah Allerton was born c. 1671 at Westmoreland County, Virginia Colony, a daughter of Isaac Allerton and Elizabeth Willoughby. (Possible christening in 1670 in Northumberland, Virginia.) She died on 17 May 1731 at Wicomico, Northumberland County, Virginia Colony.[1] She was buried 17 May 1731 at Ditchley, Northumberland, Virginia.

Sarah married twice.

She married probably at Westmoreland County, Virginia, as her 1st, to Unknown Newton.[2] This marriage is proved by her father's will in which he mentioned his daughter Sarah Lee and grandson Allerton Newton.[2]

She married c. 1700, as her 2nd, and as his 2nd, to Hancock Lee.[2] Hancock had three children from his first marriage to Mary Kendall (d 24 Dec 1694): William, Anna, and Richard.[1]

[Note (HRB): Some of the "facts" below contradict what we have for Hancock Lee I, Honorable, and will need to be reconciled.]

[Note (EH): birth date of Abt 1660 as per History of the Allerton Family. Page 34]

Children of Sarah Allerton and Hancock Lee:

  1. Ann Lee, “the younger,” born after October 25, 1702; died after September 03, 1739. Married William Eustace.

  5. Elizabeth Lee, born 1709 in Ditchley, Northumberland, Co, Virginia; married (1) Swan Jones born ca. 1708 in of Westmoreland Co., Virginia.; died 1734 in Virginia; married (2) Zachary Taylor; born 17 Apr 1707 in Rapidan. Orange, Co, Virginia; died 01 Mar 1768 in Orange, Co, Virginia. Elizabeth Lee and Hancock Taylor Lee were twins. They were christened in 1709 after their father's death.

Note: There were two different daughters of Hancock Lee, the elder named Anna Lee, daughter of his 1st wife, Mary Kendall. She married William Armstead. The other named Anne Lee, the younger, was a daughter of 2nd wife, Sarah Allerton. She married William Eustace. A very well-written article by James R. Hancock, using primary documents, has solved the question of Anna and Anne Lee. He shows they are two different women, half-sisters.

notes

Sarah, b. ---; m. Hancock Lee, whose first wife was a Miss Kendall. He had children by both marriages, and settled in what is now Great Wycomico parish, Northumberland Co., building the mansion called "Ditchley," where, in 1729, he was buried beside his two wives. He and his brother John Lee, before mentioned, were sons of Col. Richard Lee, of Virginia, descended from the Shropshire Lees, but "lately of Stratford Langton, in the county of Essex," as he states in his will of 1663. [Allertons of New England and Virginia by Isaac J. Greenwood, NEHGR 44, 1890]

Sarah married Hancock Lee, son of Col. Richard Lee and Unknown, about 1700.660 (Hancock Lee was born about 1653 in Northumberland Co., VA 660 and died on 25 May 1729 in Northumberland Co., VA 660.)
