Objective
This program aims to foster strong collaboration between all living descendants of New Amsterdam immigrants (1609-1674) - and thus improve the quality of the tree. If you are a descendant, please add your profile to the project and get involved!
Philosophy
Whilst Geni is an open collaboration platform, it is vital to respect the private genealogy initiatives from living descendants of a family. Very often, these families have researched their trees for many years. They have access to personal information that is obviously more accurate than anything else we may find. In turn, these families benefit from broad collaboration on Geni by connecting with other families and accessing new sources of information.
Hence, collaboration is and respect are the drivers in this program.
Program
If you are a name bearer or associated with the private genealogy of a 'New Amsterdam family' and you wish to participate in the program, simply tell us and we'll get started. Use Discussions to initiate the dialogue.
Activities
Under this program, you'll become a project collaborator and we will...
- Assign you as the prime contact for your family tree (possibly more than one)
- Create a master profile for the New Amsterdam progenitor(s) of your family
- Invite managers of these master profiles to accept you as the primary manager
- Assist you with mergers and problem-solving in your tree
- Liaise with the 'owners' of other families in this program to manage connections
- Connect with the Lost Traces project, to try and find antecedants to your family
Benefits
The program seeks to deliver many benefits, including...
- Solve conflicting data. With many managers on the same profile, a lot of conflicting data may arise. We'll try and dialogue around such issues and try to achieve agreement on the facts and theories...
- Spelling consistency. Names have evolved, and family branches may live by different modified names. By working together, we try to reach consensus on the spelling we wish to respect by branch and by generation.
- Patronyms and middle names. Many early settlers were only known by patronyms. In order to create consistency in your tree, we can agree on how we deal with patronyms and middle names in the various profile fields...
You'll find Dutch, French and German speakers amongst the program collaborators. Don't hesitate to ask: they can help with a) interpreting 'foreign' names and texts and b) connect you with sources in Europe!
Note: Please keep in mind that every effort in this program is based on volunteer work. In addition, if for reasons of privacy you wish the name of your name or that of your family removed, please tell us so.
Families
The list below shows the families for which a private genealogical initiative has been identified (this list will evolve over time). The names are hyperlinked to the corresponding web site. As the program evolves, we add the name and profile link of the descendant(s) that currently 'own(s)' the coordination of the program on Geni.
