Profile of the Day: Clara Barton

Clara Barton

On this day in 1881, the American Red Cross was founded by pioneering nurse Clara Barton in Washington, D.C.

Born Clarissa Harlowe Barton on Christmas Day in 1821, Clara spent most of her life helping others. During the American Civil War, she became known as the “Angel of the Battlefield” for her tireless work helping the sick and wounded. She operated the Missing Soldiers Office after the war and by the time the office closed in 1867, she had helped identify the fate of over 22,000 men.

During the Franco-Prussian War, Clara worked for the International Red Cross behind German lines. After the war, she returned to the U.S. and campaigned for the establishment of the American Red Cross organization, which would provide emergency response in the event of crisis from war or natural disasters. She served as the American Red Cross’ first president and held that position for 23 years before resigning at the age of 83.
