Profile of the Day: Colin Firth

Happy birthday to Colin Firth! Today the actor turns 64.

Firth was born on September 10, 1960 in Grayshott, Hampshire, England to Shirley Jean Rolles and David Norman Lewis Firth. Both of his parents were academics and teachers and as a child, he frequently traveled to Nigeria for his parents’ work. Firth himself was not academically inclined and decided to study theater at Drama Centre London.

After finding steady work with parts in stage, television, and film productions, Firth got his big break in 1995 when he was cast as Mr. Darcy in the television miniseries Pride and Prejudice. He has since starred in many acclaimed and popular films in a variety of genres, from the Academy Award winning drama The King’s Speech, for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor, to the romantic comedy Bridget Jones’s Diary.
