Are you a fan of science fiction? On this day in 1920, prolific science fiction author Isaac Asimov was born in Petrovichi, Russia.

Born Isaak Yudovick Ozimov, the author immigrated with his family to the United States as a child. The family settled in Brooklyn, New York and owned a succession of candy stores. The candy stores sold newspapers and magazines, which Asimov would later claim to have greatly influenced his love of the written word. He taught himself to read by the age of 5 and graduated from high school by the age of 15 to enroll in Columbia University.
By the age of 19, Asimov was selling his stories to science fiction magazines. One of the most prolific writers in history, Asimov wrote and edited over 500 books.
