On this day, actor Kiefer Sutherland was born. Kiefer William Frederick Dempsey George Rufus Sutherland was born on December 21, 1966 in London, England to actors Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas. He was named after writer-director Warren Kiefer, who had directed Donald Sutherland in his first featured film, Castle of the Living Dead. His maternal grandfather was Thomas “Tommy” Douglas, a Scottish-born Canadian politician and the seventh Premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961.

Sutherland’s first leading film role was in a Canadian drama called The Bay Boy in 1984. He then moved to Hollywood, California to pursue his career in acting. He and Robert Downey, Jr. were roommates for three years when he first moved to Hollywood. They starred together in the 1988 drama film called 1969. Sutherland has starred in many films such as Stand by Me, The Lost Boys, Young Guns, A Few Good Men, The Three Musketeers, The VanishingA Time to Kill and Forsaken where he starred with his father, Donald Sutherland.

He is known for his role as Jack Bauer on the television series 24. In 2006, he won a Primetime Emmy Award for the “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series”. He also won a Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award for his work on 24.

Sutherland currently stars in the television drama series Designated Survivor as President Tom Kirkman.
