Born into the prominent and wealthy Roosevelt family in New York, Roosevelt was nicknamed “Teddy” when he was young. He suffered from poor health as a child, but by his teens he was able to maintain a physically active lifestyle and become known as an avid outdoorsman.
In 1901, Roosevelt was sworn into the presidency after the assassination of President William McKinley. At 42, Roosevelt became the youngest president in U.S. history. During his presidency, Roosevelt made conservation a top priority. He established many new national parks, monuments, and forests to preserve the country’s natural resources.
Did you know that Roosevelt was an uncle of Eleanor Roosevelt? In 1905, he walked her down the aisle in her wedding to her distant cousin and future president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
