Profile of the Day: Warren G. Harding

Warren G. Harding

Has your family history research helped you prove any rumors in your family tree? It was recently announced that DNA tests have proven the long standing allegation that the 29th President of the United States, Warren G. Harding, fathered a child with his mistress, Nan Britton.

Harding was born on November 2, 1865 in Blooming Grove, Ohio. In 1920, he became the first sitting Senator to be elected President. During his campaign, he vowed a “return to normalcy” and to a way of life before World War I. After Harding’s sudden death in 1923, evidence of corruption within his administration began to surface.

As incidences such as the Teapot Dome scandal continued to damage his reputation, rumors of his extramarital affairs circulated. In 1927, Nan Britton published The President’s Daughter, which detailed her relationship with the President and the allegation that he was the father of her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Blaesing. The accusations caused a media sensation and Britton was swiftly vilified in public. It wasn’t until now that DNA tests were able to prove Britton’s claims.
