Profiles of the Day: Bonnie and Clyde
On May 23, 1934, notorious criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were shot to death in an ambush by the Texas and Louisiana state police. For two years during the Great Depression, the infamous couple committed robberies and murders throughout the U.S. Their crimes captured the imagination of the nation. At the time, the public’s attitude was against the government and banks and the couple used that to their advantage. The intense media coverage mixed their reputation as dangerous outlaws with a “Robin Hood”-like view of the couple. This romanticized version of the duo has now become an important part of American folklore.
