There seems to be some question of who Elizabeths' parents are. I have: Francis Browne, of Newbury & Mary Browne, of Newbury (My 8th Great Grandparents). There seems to be a real problem with Mary Brown... The main source of my info is from the internet (site: http://minerdescent.com/2010/06/07/john-johnson/). However there is another Mary Brown at Mary Clark that has different husbands, children & DOD... Now I don't know for sure who her parents are... Would appreciate input that might help me figure out which profile has the "right" info about my 8th g-grandparenats.

Does this question work for you to help in clarifying my conundrum?

I've now reviewed the notes etc in her profile and so far I believe the tree is correct as is

http://ma-vitalrecords.org/MA/Essex/Newbury/Images/Newbury_B073.shtml

Your Elizabeth was born at Newbury (not Andover) daughter of Francis Brown

Will continue uploading source data

See: https://www.geni.com/threads/6000000067601114145 that initiated this question.

Can I ask what made you think Mary Browne, of Newbury might be the same person as Mary Clark

Oh! Silly question. They have the same parents on Geni.

So one of them had wrong parents.

Does not have parents or vitals for Mary Clark. She may have picked them up from her sister. Also I would expect as an indicted witch her records may have been deliberately obscured.

Based on the info from this site:
http://minerdescent.com/2010/06/07/john-johnson/
Mary Johnson
* Born 1638 Andover, Mass
* Married: Francis Brown I on 21 Nov 1653 in Newbury, Mass
* Died 4 Apr 1679 in Newbury, Mass
* Parents: John Johnson & Susanna Asherst
** John Johnson was born in 1609 in Herne Hill, Kent, England, a few miles west of Canterbury.
*** His parents were  William JOHNSON and Susan PORREDGE.
*** He married Susanna ASHERST in Herne Hill.
*** He came with his wife Susanna from Herne Hill, Kent, England.
*** He arrived in New England probably about 1630, and came possibly first to Charlestown with Capt. Edward Johnson who later went to Woburn. They were probably brothers.
*** John died soon after 12 Sep 1683 in Andover, Essex, Mass.

It looks like Mary Johnson was born in Andover, Mass, married Francis Brown in Newbury, Mass (so must have moved there after marriage) hence Elizabeth would have been born in Newbury...

The info from the above site(s) seems to be well documented so have used it as my primary site for info for this branch.

This site has info that seems to belong to the "other" Mary Johnson:
http://our-royal-titled-noble-and-commoner-ancestors.com/p450.htm#i...
Mary Johnson
* F, #13504,
* b. circa 1638
* Father John Johnson b. 1609
* Mother Susanna Asherst b. 1611
* Mary Johnson was born circa 1638 at of Andover, Essex, MA.
** She married Ephraim Davis,
*** son of James Davis and Cicely Thayer, on 31 December 1659 at Haverhill, Essex, MA.
* Mary Johnson married Edward Clark on 1 November 1682 at Haverhill, Essex, MA. [Incorrect if she died in 1679!/ps]
* Family Ephraim Davis b. c 1634, d. 28 Sep 1679

The only problem is that this has the same parents... (John & Susanna)

I will disconnect Mary wife of Edward Clark & delete her vitals. Can you check for records on the children of John Johnson & Susannah Ashehurst? Should be in the Great Migration project & Savage

No citations in Our Royal ancestor page. Disregard it.

I'm afraid its looking the other way around

Page 2

Mary Johnson, second child of John Johnson of Andover and his wife Susannah, married Ephraim Davis and Edward Clark

There is a reference to this family @ http://our-royal-titled-noble-and-commoner-ancestors.com/p430.htm#i... (starts with her mother...)

There it also says that Mary was married to Ephraim Davis... Soooooo, This site & the one you mention above add to the confusion!!!!!!!!!

Forget those sites:)

What I think you want to do is look for Francis Brown in rootsweb which might have citations and in Savage's Gen Dictionary, and there are other book sources. Clearly the sites have mixed up the 2 girls

Also I think the Andover birthplace is off. I'd look for her in Newbury

Sorry I mean I believe the Johnson PDF & I think I know how to prove it. Concentrate on Francis Brown records ...

The problem with this page is he's compiling from tertiary sources, not even published secondary sources.

https://minerdescent.com/2010/06/07/francis-brown/

That's what got him in trouble with mixing up the Mary's.

But Goody Mary Clark is in records and scholarly works because of her indictment.

http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi... quotes the Great Migration Project for John Johnson of Andover

Daughter Mary b say 1638 married Ephraim Davis

That's gold standard,

I'll upload the page.

OK, so your Mary (Johnson) Brown is now parent-less. She was definitely "of" Newbury at marriage, these were notes in the Francis Brown profile:

-------

Francis Browne, another brother, married Mary Johnson, of Newbury, and of their seven children, the second, Mary, born in 1657, married Nathan Parker, Jun. The fourth child being John Browne, born May 13, 1665, who married Ruth Huse.

Coffin, in his history of Newbury, says: ...

------

So now we know --

- her Johnson name is not spurious (we can't rule out a widow yet)
- there was a Johnson family in Newbury
- Coffin might be a good source

Glad for your assistance Erica.

This is a fun one. Witches ! (But not on Pat's side).

Ephraim Davis is missing a number of his 10 children yet I could swear I've seen them in Geni before.

Coffin is a gold mine, there's Indian troubles in the Browne family

This rootsweb entry has good citations for Francis Brown

http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi...

Millennium File (based on what ) has Mary Johnson born 1632 no
Parents in Newbury. No VR for Newbury that early

Here's the will of Francis Browne if anyone wants to try it

Marriage record for Mary Johnson and Francis Browne

And that's all there is. No parents that I can find.

http://international.loc.gov/master/gdc/scdser01/200401/books_on_fi... page 18 lists the probable children that of John Johnson of Andover. His daughter Mary married Ephraim Davis in 1660. Mary of Newbury was married in 1654 to Francis Browne.

Erica, Thanks so much for all of the info you have provided. I added some of it to profiles for Francis & Mary & updated what I have in my computer's geni program for them, including deleting her parents. What a headache!!!

You are awesome!!!! :-)

Erica, should the info about "John Johnson" that is in the first part of Mary's about section be removed since he is not her father??? I italicized his name & appreciate the comment you made after the marriage of John & Susanna... but was wondering if that is enough...
In my computer I made all of that info a different color...

Yes, I think you should ahead and remove details of John Johnson from not his daughter's profile. I didn't want to mess with your formatting and also that you had seen the research results. But let me know if you'd rather I did the edit.
