This discussion is a continuation of https://www.geni.com/discussions/172007?page=54 wherin one of your friendly neighborhood Curators suggested we create a discussion as a focal point for users requesting help from Geni's curators (see https://www.geni.com/curators for more information about curators).

The purpose of this discussion is to enable you to easily post requests for assistance. Posting requests here will get you a much faster response than contacting us privately, as all curators can see this discussion, as well as many other users who can assist as well.

Presently what we can help you with is:
* "killing zombies" - Zombies are historical profiles that are wrongly marked as living, and thus block merges. Please continue posting these requests here: https://www.geni.com/discussions/142109
* Make public – if a historical profile is wrongly marked as private, we can ask the system to check if it should be marked public.
* Complete pending merges between ANY pair of public profiles.

We most STRONGLY recommend that you ALWAYS first try and contact the other managers. You WILL get better and faster results that way (we are a last resort).

We also HIGHLY recommend that anyone who is serious about merging in the shared parts of our tree, join the Collaboration Pool. You will find there 500+ people there all wanting to help each other out. Read about it and JOIN here: https://www.geni.com/discussions/74031

While initially we would like to concentrate on cleaning up the shared parts of the historical tree (such as European Royalty), we can and will assist anywhere needed. We will soon also start discussions that are for specific “areas” of the tree, for better focus.

What we can’t and WILL NOT do is:

* Do YOUR work for you. If you see duplicates in a tree, and can stack them, please do so, BEFORE you ask us to complete the merges. Do the maximum that you can. There are 5,000,000 of you users, and only 24 Curators... WE need YOUR help at least as much as you need us. This is a TEAM effort.

* Before you ask us to merge a "stack" of pending merges, do through the stack yourself, and check if all of the profiles belong there. It is NOT too hard, and you'll save everybody a lot of work and grief. You might find the following guide useful: http://wiki.geni.com/index.php/Resolving_Merge_Issues

* Connect new trees to the “big-tree”. If you want to do so, please have the courtesy to explain to the manager(s) of the unconnected tree, what this means and involves. MOST problems in the “big-tree” are due to people being dragged into it, against their will or without anyone explaining what this means.

* MOST importantly - We will NOT force ANY decisions on any one. If you have issues with the other manager(s), please try and work them out first.

Feel free to join the discussion, we'd like to hear your opinions as well.

Thank you,

The Geni Curator Team

* Make public – if a historical profile is wrongly marked as private, we can ask the system to check if it should be marked public.

How about helping with making living famous persons public, is that possible in this thread?

Private User,

There is another discussion that you might use: https://www.geni.com/discussions/166171

... with quite a misleading title.... I have had many requests from users who have asked me to make their own profile to a Master Profile.

Mike Stangel -- Is it actually currently true that "There are .... only 24 Curators" ?

2/23/2018 at 8:27 PM

Mike may not have proof-read the rather old original posting for this on-going thread ... you can see a list of some of the more than 200 current Geni Curators at https://www.geni.com/curators

2/23/2018 at 8:34 PM

I'll also mention here something important which is not noted in the original notice of this topic:

* Curators can optionally lock fields AND relationship associated with profiles which have the "Master Profile" flag set. This can be a useful step to preserve the integrity of well-documented profiles and their family relationships.

(Note that there is a separate discussion for seeking "Master Profile" designation for a deceased ancestor: you can find that in the 'sticky' Public discussion titled: "Curators: My profile is good enough to be ..." )

Could someone please undo the merge of Friedrich Rudolf Schück and Fritz Schück? https://www.geni.com/merge/view?revision_id=71722442790. Thank you!

Private User, husbands merged.

Daniel Travers: un-merge completed; since that operation is not always 'clean', please check the details on both -- I used the "Review" page as a guide for the bit of cleanup I did on them after the un-merge.

Dear curators, I've been talking to Gary Tishkoff (very remotely related) and we believe these 3 private profiles are all him:

Her N.N. Nielsdatter (Hvide) children needs to be moved over to N.N. Uffesdatter Neb

After that, N.N. Nielsdatter (Hvide) needs to be detached from her not husband, then merged with N.N. Nielsdatter (Hvide) in order to get the right husband and child.

thank you very much. I see you merged not only Gary but lot of other nearby duplicates (we thought he'd be able to do them once he is merged). Much appreciated.

Hello Curators... Please split this tree, in which two different couples have been confused/combined: Hans Rahn Jr. (1857-1907) and Katherine Margaret "Maggie" Knutzen (1864-1929) vs. Hans F Rahn (1867-1925) and Margaretha "Maggie" Newman/Niemann (1870-1941). The existing profile for a son of the latter couple, Lee H Rahn, currently has two sets of parents but needs to be assigned to only Hans F Rahn and Margaretha "Maggie" Rahn (nee Newman).

I've added some additional profiles, record assignments, and description info that should help people in the future from confusing these two Hans & Maggie couples who both lived in Douglas County, Illinois, at the same time.

Lee H Rahn: Lee H Rahn

Private User Thanks, hopes it stays that way, the tree was vandalized by some genius...

2/25/2018 at 12:06 PM

The tree is now split... It seems to have happened when I was doing some nearby merges and was again offered the chance to assign correct parents for Lee Rahn, but this time it let me assign the parents and the tree was split afterwards. I'm not sure if I did that or if a curator was working at the same time as I was. In any case, it's all good now. Thanks!

Geni seems to be malfunctioning upon import of a FamilySearch link.

The link in question: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2MV-CDHX

is to a death record. Geni is not able to import that link as a document in the Sources tab. Instead it switches to a German greeting "Weiterleitung zur Anmeldeseite" and displays the FamilySearch start-up page.

FS is free, I've had an account there for many years, and can't see why Geni seems to look at this as if it were behind a paywall.

For now I've posted the link in the "About" section of the profile until the mechanism gets repaired. Please have a look. Thank you.

My apologies, I omitted the relevant Geni profile: Rose Goodman

Private User - Family Search now requires one to log in - it is free, BUT - if you have logged in, and then try to create a document from the link, then just as with attempts to creat a Document from Ancestry by folks logged in to Ancestry and to JewishGen by folks logged in to JewishGen, etc -- it will NOT Create A Document of what you were looking at from the link.
The fact that it is free does not matter. What matters is the fact that one must log in, one cannot go directly from the link unless one is logged in.
And therefore Geni's Create A Document cannot work for it. (And this may well be one of the reasons they initiated requiring logging in, for all I know)

Also, Private User - went to the Profile you link to above, clicked on the link - got the FamilySearch sign-in page, signed in to my free account there - and upon logging in, went to the page you were apparently referencing.

Not sure if this is what you think should happen, or ??
Also, refer you to this discussion: https://www.geni.com/discussions/174465 which is titled "FamilySearch.org soon to require login for records search " and was started specifically to discuss the problems that would cause.
