They are all pretty distant connections, but to be related to 75% of the presidents is just crazy. And Queen Elizabeth, Churchill, Princess Di, Steve Martin, Mayflower passengers... Many of the presidents are related to each other (Bush, Adams are extreme examples, of course) but somehow my ancestors connected multiple lines together, it appears.

To be 10th cousins, you have to have a connection 10 generations back. There are 1024 people that are that far back in a family. So, yes, the odds that you can share 1/1024 with someone else's 1/1024 is not a stretch.

This is what Geni is about though, right? Why else are we putting the "Big Tree" together? I'm not as impressed by my family as I am with Geni. It seems that this is what it's all about. If Geni were to have a marketing campaign, it should center around information like this.

It's all pretty cool

I'm currently working on VP Elbridge Thomas Gerry, Sr.. I can find that he had two politically significant descendants, but I can't find which of his children they are descended from.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elbridge_Gerry_(Maine)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_G._Gerry

If anybody could work some genealogy magic here, it would be appreciated.

Gene and I have merged the duplicates in the big tree for the US presidents. We will start on the VPs next.

The things Gene and I need assistance with the most are getting the duplicate profiles stacked (we can approve the merges pretty quickly once they are stacked) and adding sources.

Private User:

The work you folks do is very much appreciated. Your donation of time and effort makes this more enjoyable for everyone. You have my thanks.

I'm going through and requesting collaboration with the managers of all of the duplicates I can find. This is very slow.

Meanwhile, I'm adding information/profiles where I can. Private User has been extremely helpful so far. :-)

I've locked the Presidents to stop crazy merges that was causing a lot of extra work, but that means most of you can't edit the profiles. Please give some feedback whether having the stability is worth not being able to edit. Geni is looking at ways to lock the relationships and keep the editing open.

If the lock causes too much aggravation, I'll unlock them.

I think that locking them is a great idea.

What would happen for merge requests? There are multiple profiles out there. If someone wants to merge, would the request go to you (or maybe all curators) to approve? That would be great functionality.

I would like to publicly endorse the locking that Gene did. This will keep everything more manageable. Good job.

I'll go through and link to all of the Master Profiles of all of the Presidents.

Merges can be stacked, but it would take any curator to complete. For the most part I think all merge-able presidential profiles are already merged in. Robert and others stacked a ton, which are all completed now.

If anyone is so inclined the grandparents on back for most presidents need merging.

If you see something that needs attention, post it here.

Thanks for the MP list Daniel. I'll help work on some of these.

When I go to the master profile for President McKinley, it shows President McKinley as being his own brother. This shows up when I go to the path for how he's related to me. I'm a cousin of wife Ida. The path shows Ida, her husband President McKinley, then his brother President McKinley. Just thought you would like to clean that up.

bumping to the top so others are aware of this project ...

I started a wiki page for the Presidents - http://wiki.geni.com/index.php/US_Presidents

This is the 2nd list of Notable Profiles. We have been working on Mayflower Passengers - http://wiki.geni.com/index.php/Mayflower_Passengers
Discussion here: http://www.geni.com/discussions/6000000010037047103

Vice Presidents are next. We have the list of Vice Presidents, but I'm not sure how many of them have Master Profiles.

Thank you so much, Brendan.

I am sure we *don't* have some of the vice presidential profiles, and I wonder how we should be approach that.

My pleasure.

Like with the Mayflower passengers, we can just list them in the Wiki with no link.

PS
That is a list of all the Master Profile for US Vice Presidents. Hats off to Gene for a lot of work here.

I added the Vice Presidents to the wiki page. Thanks for the list. I also added John Nance "Cactus Jack" Garner, III, 32nd Vice President of the USA to the list.

Sorry to be writing again. Last time. I believe the order may be off starting with Daniel D. Tompkins, 6th Vice President of the USA

http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/briefing/Vice_Pr...

Adlai was 23rd, Garret 24th ... good catch.

Brendan ... it seems that I just made several random errors instead of screwing them all up!

Should be ok now. Double check.

Gene, thanks for the list and the fixes. I couldn't find Biden, so thanks for the link. Really cool that we have MP's for all the Presidents and Vice Presidents!

I heard an interview on NPR this morning about a historian at Harvard who used DNA to prove that Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United States of America and Sarah 'Sally' Hemings did have children together. Here is a link to the interview:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=130180642

I haven't read it yet but here is the book she published:
http://www.amazon.com/Hemingses-Monticello-American-Family/dp/03933...

There is a link to an extensive Wikip page on the case on Jefferson's profile, under Documents.

I noticed that a couple of Presidents were missing from the wiki page, so I added them.

Could someone change Andrew Johnson, 17th President of the United States to be the 17th President?

Thanks

Fixed.
