Disputed Parents: DNA Evidence

Some genealogy sources incorrectly identify Thomas Hull, 1552 – 1636 (the father of George Hull and Rev. Joseph Hull), as also being the father of Richard Hull, the subject of this WikiTree profile. A comparison of DNA samples provided by descendants of these individuals shows that Richard Hull was not a descendant of Thomas Hull. This is shown in the Y-DNA results page for the Hull DNA project.[1]

Near the top of the page, test results for descendants of George Hull and Rev. Joseph Hull appear under the heading “I001 Crewkerne”. All of them are associated with subclades of haplogroup I, a major branch of the human family tree)

Further down the page, test results for descendants of Richard Hull can be found under the heading “R002 Richard Hull New Haven”. All of them are associated with R-M269 (a subclade of haplogroup R, another major branch of the human family tree).

In the context of all human ancestors, individuals in haplogroups I and R would share a very distant common ancestor. DNA researchers have estimated that the most recent common ancestor where these ancestral lines converge would have lived about 47,000 years ago.[2] Given that these two ancestral lines come together so far in the past, individuals belonging to haplogroups I and R should not be considered related for the purposes of genealogy. This clearly rules out Thomas Hull as the father of Richard Hull.

Biography

This profile represents the unknown father of Richard Hull (born 1599) and Andrew Hull (born about 1606). Without this profile it was not possible to link Richard and Andrew as brothers.

It is estimated that this unknown father would have been born about 1574 based on Richard's birth date. It is also estimated that he died sometime after the birth of Andrew in 1606.

Previously, the profiles of both Andrew and Richard were incorrectly shown as sons of Thomas Hull, born about 1552, in Crewkerne, Somerset, England.

Comparison of DNA samples taken from the descendants of Richard Hull and Thomas Hull show that Richard Hull is not a descendant of Thomas Hull. This is can be seen in the Y-DNA results page for the Hull DNA Project.

Near the top of the chart, the test results for descendants of Thomas Hull and sons George Hull and Rev. Joseph Hull appear under the heading “I001 Crewkerne”. All of them are associated with subclade I-1 (or more broadly, haplogroup I, a major branch of the human family tree)

Further down the chart, test results for descendants of Richard Hull can be found under the heading “R002 Richard Hull New Haven”. All of them are associated with subclade R-M269 (or haplogroup R, another major branch of the human family tree).

Since the R haplogroup of Richard Hull's descendants does not match the I haplogroup of Thomas Hull's descendants, it is not possible that Thomas Hull could have been the father of Richard Hull. The same conclusion is valid for Andrew Hull, since there is credible documentation that he is Richard's brother.
