The Official roster of the soldiers of the American Revolution buried in the state of Ohio: Aquilla NORRIS, Brown County, Ohio, Roster I, pg. 273, died 1812, buried near Feesburg, Brown County, Ohio. He was a Captain in Harford County, Maryland Militia.

The will of Thomas Norris of Winter's Run" was dated December 1757 and probated in the Orphan's Court of Baltimore County, Maryland March 1761. To son John, "one-half the land called 'Macedon,' on that part where the great hollow rock lyeth." To son Aquila, "the other part of Macedon, that part where my dwelling standeth." To son Thomas, "Land called Turkey Range, 54 acres." To son Alexander, "Land called Hills and Dales, 47 acres." To son James, "Negro girl called Phillis." Executrix: "My loving wife, Elizabeth" who was still living in 1769.

AQUILA NORRIS, son of Thomas, 4-13 and Elizabeth (McComas) was b. in 1739 in Harford County, Maryland. He married Priscilla Temperence Norris, daughter of Thomas Norris #3-8 of Part I and Averilla (Scott) Norris of Baltimore County, Maryland. His Rev. War Service as Capt. of the Harford County Militia, can be found in "Soldiers Buried in Ohio" published by D.A.R. of Ohio. (note from JTR: This is incorrect. He was not a Captain, but a Private). After his wife died and his house burned in 1793, he left Maryland with his eleven children, his brother James and his nephew Abraham Norris and went to Mason County, Kentucky. In 1805 these families moved to Brown County, Ohio, where Aquila d. February 6, 1812.

From the History of Brown County, Lewis Township: "The same year (1805) two brothers, James and Aquila Norris moved to Brown County, Ohio. They were originally from Md. but immediately from Kentucky. James settled near Dayton and Aquila came to this township, accompanied by his nephew, Abraham Norris, the son of another brother Thomas. Aquila remained a citizen of the township until his death, which occurred soon after the War of 1812. A large family of children survive him, Abraham Norris was one of a family of 15."

Aquilla Norris, of Thomas served as Pvt. Capt. John Taylor's Company, No. 7 Harford County. Militia & signed the roll of James McComas (Hist. of Harford County, Preston & MSS rec. Maryland Vol. III pg. 3). Aquilla, his brother James & his nephew, Abraham Norris migrated to Mason County, Kentucky about 1793. He remained in this county till abt 1805 when he moved to Lewis Township, Brown County, Ohio. Priscilla is stated to have died 1805 Md. We have no evidence that this statement is correct; she may have been at home on a visit when she died or she may died in Mason County, Kentucky. He's buried in family burying ground Brown County, Ohio.

"Priscilla Temperance (dau of. Thomas Norris & Averilla Scott). Rebecca Norris married Thomas Doin in 1814 per Mason co. Ky. Marriage Bond dtd July 7, 1814. Aquilla (son of Thomas Norris & Elizabeth McComas ref. Josserand & Davis books) was born c. 1739 (ref. Josserand & Davis Books) or c. 1750 (ref. Revolutionary Patriots of Harford Co., Md 1775 - 1783 Henry C. Peden Jr., MA, Bel Air, Md). In 1761 he inherited 50 acres of land from his father (Baltimore Will Bk. 2 pg. 357; Md. Deed Records Lib. AL BK. A pg. 173). On Early Md documents, his name is spelled AQUILA, but a copy of his signature on a marriage bond in Mason co., Ky & Deeds in Clermont co., Oh. show that he used the "AQUILLA" spelling later in his life. On Feb 27, 1769 Aquilla sold his 50 acres of Macedon, the land he inherited from his father, to Henry Davis (per Md Land Records No. A page 173). He married Priscilla, (his second cousin, once removed) prior to 1773 (ref. Davis Book). Their common ancestors are Edward Norris & Mary Freeman. During the Revolutionary War, Aquilla served as a private in Capt. Taylor's Co. No. 7 Harford co. Militia, signing the rolls on Sept. 9, 1775 (Davis Book, History of Harford co. Md Walter W. Preston & Revolutionary Patriots of Harford co., Md 1775 - 1783 Henry C. Peden Jr. Ma., Bel Air, Md). He signed the Association of Freeman of Md in 1776, (Revolutionary Patriots of Harford co., Md 1775 - 1783 Henry C. Peden Jr. Ma., Bel Air, Md), & the Oath of Allegiance to Md, Harford co., in 1778 (ref. Maryland State Archives, Davis Book, Revolutionary Patriots of Harford co., Md 1775 - 1783 Henry C. Peden Jr. Ma., Bel Air, Md). NOTE: Some sources use the revolutionary war record of "Aquila (of Edward)" for subject Aquilla. This compiler has found that the two Aquila's were cousins & believes that sources listing subject Aquilla as a Capt. in the Harford co., Md militia are in error. After his wife died & his house burned in 1793, Aquilla left Md & with his 11 children moved to Mason co., Ky. On Sep. 5, 1799, Steven Hieatt & Aquilla Norris gave their children, Jonathan Hieatt & Patty Norris, permission to marry. The marriage bond is dtd 9 Sep. 1799 & recorded in Maysville, Mason co., Ky. Which of Aquilla's daughters is "Patty" is yet to be determined. The book "History of Brown co. Oh." published in 1883 by W. H. Beers & Co., Chicago, Il., states on pg. 462: "This same year (1805), James & Aquilla Norris, two brothers, moved to Oh. They were orginally from Md, but immediately from Ky. James settled near Dayton," (actually Butler co., Oh.) "& Aquilla came to this township (Lewis) accompanied by Abraham Norris, his nephew, the son of another brother, Thomas. Aquilla remained a citizen of the township till his death, which occured soon after the war of 1812." On Sep. 30, 1808, Aquilla purchased 201 Acres of land from James Buchannan for $200.00, a part of tract No. 1716 surveyed for Robert Lawson on the East Fork of Bullskin Creek, Clermont co., Lewis Twp., Oh. in the district laid off for the Va Continental line of Officers & Soldiers (ref. Brown co. Oh. Deed Records, 1801-18 pg. 281). Aquilla & Rebecca to Aquilla's son Elisha Norris (ref. Brown co. Oh. Deed Records 1801-18 pg. 380). The book "Kentucky Descendants of Thomas Norris of Md, 1630 - 1953" shows Priscilla's parents to be Thomas Norris & Averilla Scott. An unpublished document in the Library of Congress, "The Norris Family of Md & Va, A Genealogy og Thomas Norris" lists Joseph Norris & Mary __ as her parents. Thomas & Joseph were half-brothers. Joseph was the son of John Norris & his first spouse Elizabeth Parsons, Thomas was the son of John Norris & his second spouse Mary Newman. This compiler has not been able to confirm either source; so data from the published document is used. Aquilla inherited 50 acres of the land from his father in early 1761 from his father Thomas Norris Baltimore co., Md Will Records Bk. 2pg. 357 He sold this land to Henry Davis 27 Feb. 1769 Baltimore co., Md Deed records Lib AL Bk.
