Van Niewkerk or Nieuwkerk means from the New Church in Dutch.
He was a millwright, carpenter and farmer at Kingston, from which he removed to Virginia about 1732, acquiring by purchase from his brother-in-law, John Hood, in September 1737, a tract of 535 acres. On this he built a mill [August 7, 1759 -= Permission granted to Barent Newkirk and John Hoogland to build a mill on tulisae Run - court Orders Frederick County, Virginia] and a large house, some portions of which are still standing, and by thrift acquired a competence. In the records of Orange, Frederick, and Berkely counties, Virginia. The name Barent became Barnet and Barnabas. He married, May 23, 1713, Rebecca van Buntschooten ;Van Buntshoten, van Bentschoten Bents Bunschotten. Rachel van Bintshooten, sister of Rebecca wife of Barent Nieuwkirk married Jan Hood, Oct 27, 1718 - Kingston Dutch Church Records.] baptized at Kingston, (gerrets) van Buntschoten, who was named in her husband's will of February 17, 1765.
The name Barent became Barnet and Barnabas.

Barent Newkirk (Cornelis, Gerretse, Cornelisse), baptized at Kingston, Ulster County, October 13, 1689; died near Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia, in 1765. He married, May 23, 1713, Rebecca van Buntschooten, baptized at Kingston, January 28, 1692, daughter of Teunis Elias and Gerretje Gerrets van Buntschoten, who was named in her husband's will of February 18, 1765." In Sep 1737 he purchased a tract of 535 acres from his brother in law John Hood. His given name became "Barnabus" in the records of Orange, Frederick, & Berkeley Counties, VA. He married May 23,1713 Rebecca Van Buntschoten. Barent Newkirk moved from Hurley, Long Island to Salem Co., NJ and was in Virginia by 1737. His land in VA was 10 miles north of Martinsburg at the foot of North Mountain. [1] [2]
13 Jan 1767, John Potts granted 77 acres on Potowmack River, Frederick Co, surveyed for Bernard Newkirk...."said Bernard Newkirk not complying with an advertisement issued from my office dated Mar 26th 1765 requiring all persons who had surveys in this office dated before the year 1762 to pay for the same before a certain time therein mentioned or they should forfeit all right and claim to the saidd surveys as may more fully appear by the sd advertisement recorded in my office in Book N if refer) the saidd land is bounded as follows: Beginning at a sugar tree corner to Bernard Newkirks Patented land thence along his line.....signed: Thos Martin [3]
