About Beatrice Evelyn May Southwell

Beatrice Evelyn May Midson was born in 1882 and married William Southwell in 1904. As a young lad William was apprenticed to Uncle Alfred Bembrick at storekeeper at Grenfell. He then apparently bought a store at Mandurama and stayed there for some years, eventually selling the store for a profit. With the proceeds of the sale William bought a store at Epping and established Southwell and Company. At first William and Beatrice lived in High Street, Epping just around the corner from the shop but then moved to Langston Place. This was a large Californian style bungalow, built about 1920, single storey in construction with spreading tiled verandahs and large pillars. A successful businessman, Will Southwell became interested in property and eventually owned at least eight shops in Bridge Street and quite a few cottages in Epping. He was a staunch supporter of the Epping Methodist Church, evidence which is the fact hat his name is recorded on the foundation stone of the Sunday School Hall which he was asked to open in 1919.The home in Langston Place was often the venue for family celebrations which many of the Midson family attended. There was always a birthday celebration for Charlotte Midson at which Will would present a small bag containing one shilling for each year of her age. These were always bright and shiny and especially obtained for the occasion. After Will's death Beatrice, or Jog, as she was called by the family, was always pleased to entertain visitors and there was always a high tea on Sunday Afternoon. This consisted of jam/cream sponge cake bought from the local cake shop, bread, jam and Nestles tinned cream.
