About Linda Maud Woodhouse

Linda Maude Midson was born in 1879 and married Henry George Grenville Woodhouse in 1903. Henry was the eldest son of a Methodist Minister, Henry Woodhouse from Rotherdam, Yorkshire, England and his wife Mary Granville Grenfell who had been born in Brisbane. Following their marriage the couple set up their home at "Gledswood" a property at Camden where Harry was employed as a gardener. It is understood that the property was owned by the McArthur-Onslow family. Apparently the other members of Linda's family took the opportunity to visit them at Gledswood as is evident by a postcard from Gledswood from Rick (Ida) to Gordon saying she was sending a photo of the place as he was the only one of the family who had not seen it (5th October 1908). The family moved to Turramurra for a short period of eight months while a house was being built at Gordon. The home was in Elgin Street, East Gordon and was of weatherboard construction. Being on 1/2 acre of land, Harry would supplement his own flowers with purchases from the markets and then take them from door to door to sell from North Sydney up the North Shore, where he developed regular customers. He had an old touring car to use in his business and for family transport. Harry also engaged in landscape gardening and at one time owned a florist shop in North Sydney. He was about 5'2" tall and always wore a moustache and smoked a pipe. He used to collect mosquito larvae from an old drum in the yard to feed his goldfish and it is reported that he liked to have his feet tickled with a feather. It is also reported that the family home always had red back spiders in the laundry and toilet.
